Sherman Shell Obituary

Sherman L. Shell, 89, of Black Mountain, passed away at his home on January 29, 2011. He was born in Watauga, Tennessee and he lived in Black Mountain for the past 58 years. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1945, in many battles and campaigns in Africa, Italy, and France. He attended the University of Tennessee and received a Masters Degree form East Tennessee State University. Sherman worked for the Veteran's Administration for 35 years. After retiring from the Charles George VA Medical Center, he worked in the real estate business for 10 years. He was active in his church and civic and community groups. His life was one of service. Sherman spent most of his retirement helping the Junior Order's American Children's Home. He had a smile on his face until the day he passed away.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lena Shell; and sons, Gary Shell and Ronnie and wife, Shelly; grandchildren and great grandchildren, John and wife, Andrea, Andrew and Hannah, Sarah and husband, Matt, and Maggie Libby.

The family expresses their appreciation for the love and care shown by visiting Angels, Care partners and Careparteners Hospice, Mountain Ridge Wellness Center, Dr. James Marnock and staff, and all of the loving and caring church friends.

The funeral service will be Wednesday at 2 PM at the First Christian Church with the Rev. Joe Friddle Officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 PM until the service hour at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Sherman's honor be made to First Christen Church, 201 Blue Ridge Rd, Black Mountain, NC 28711.
