William Franklin "Bill" Crisp, Jr.

Swannanoa - U.S. Army SFC William Franklin "Bill" Crisp, Jr., 81, of Swannanoa, passed away Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville.

Born in Almond, NC, July 25, 1933, he was the youngest of 7 children of the late William Franklin Crisp, Sr. and Maggie Woodard Crisp. In addition to his parents, Bill is preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Franklin Crisp; and two sisters, Constance Crisp Perry, and Lakey B. Crisp.

Mr. Crisp was a graduate of Needham Broughton High School in Raleigh, and attended Eastern Carolina University as well as Duke University's Respiratory Therapist Program. As a SFC in the US Army, he served 3 years as part of the 29th Evacuation Hospital support stateside in Campbell, KY, and another 3 years with the 805th Military Police Company in Raleigh. He retired from Black Mountain Neuro-Medical Treatment Center as a registered nurse. Mr. Crisp was a member of the First Baptist Church of Swannanoa, and a member of the Builders Sunday School Class. Bill was Buncombe County's first EMT instructor, and taught basic life support since 1963. He started Mission Hospital's Respiratory Therapy Department, where he worked for 8 years, and he also helped to set up the neo-natal transport program in Western North Carolina. Medicine was his passion in life, and he also enjoyed reading, and fishing.

Survivors include his daughter, Kimberly Crisp Simmons of Hilton Head Island, SC; surrogate daughter, Angela Dawn Hamilton and her husband, Steven D. Hamilton, of Bluffton, SC and their children, Amanda K. Hamilton of Washington, D.C., Banks Matthew Hamilton of Tigerville, SC, Dylan A. Masters of Bluffton, SC, Preston N. Masters of Bluffton, SC, and Rachel L. Hamilton of Greenwood, SC; siblings, Jenny Crisp Hale of Newbern, James Oliver Crisp of Raleigh, and Dorothy Ballard of Columbia, SC; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

A funeral service will be held 10:30 AM Thursday, January 15 at the First Baptist Church of Swannanoa with Dr. Jeff Dowdy officiating. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM at the church prior to the service. Committal services will follow at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain at 12:00 PM with Military Honors.

I met Bill as he was the first nurse I worked under many yr ago at blk mtn center. He took me under his wing, and became a very dear friend to myself, children, and family. He is one of few I have looked up to, and his dear soul was the greatest of great!!! May he rejoice his newfound home in peace and comfort. We love u Mr. Bill gone but never forgotten. I am so sorry that I was unable to attend Bill's funeral. I have a virus and I do not want to give it to anyone.
I wish I had known that Bill was sick and could have visited him at the VA Hospital. I feel as though Bill was our last link with the "Eastern NC Crisps and the Western". He was a very special person and will be greatly missed. I am so very sorry for your loss.
