Tracy Medlin Jr.

WINSTON-SALEM - The Reverend Dr. William Tracy Medlin, Jr., of Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community, formerly of Lake Junaluska, NC, died peacefully on Tuesday, December 24, 2013 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. W. T. was born on January 8, 1916 in Raleigh, NC, to the late W. Tracy Medlin, Sr. and Ruby Jones Medlin. He graduated from Hugh Morson High School, Louisburg College, Wofford College, and The Divinity School of Duke University. He was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree by Pfeiffer (College) University. W. T. married June Thompson in 1945 and shared his life with her for sixty-five years, until her death in December 2010. W. T. served many churches in the Western North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church, including the Hiwassee Circuit, Highlands, Robbinsville-Fontana, Central: Clyde, Faith: Gastonia, Spindale, Green Street: Winston-Salem, First: Cherryville, Central: Albemarle, Centenary: Greensboro, Marion District Superintendent, and, Trinity: Kannapolis. He also served as the Western North Carolina Conference Secretary for seven years. After 40 years he retired, then served an additional 20 years, three at Faith, Frances Cove, and Fincher's Chapel in Hazelwood, and seventeen at Crabtree in Clyde. At the time of his death, W. T. was the oldest Ordained Elder in the Western North Carolina Conference. W.T. is survived by sons, William T. Medlin, III and wife, Sarah, of Winston-Salem, and John T. Medlin and wife, Nancy, of Greensboro; grandchildren, Karen M. Morgan and husband, Neal, William T. Medlin, IV and wife, Kathy, Philip C. Medlin and wife, Rachel, John T. Medlin, Jr., Andrew Medlin, and Christopher Medlin; great-granddaughters, Alden Morgan, and Anna and Allie Medlin, and numerous nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 2:00 p.m., in the Fellowship Hall of Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community. The family will receive friends after the service of worship. Inurnment will be held in the spring at Crabtree United Methodist Church Cemetery in Clyde, NC. The Medlin Family would like to express profound appreciation to the nurses and staff of Asbury Place for the warm and loving care provided for W. T. The family also expresses gratitude to the physicians and nurses of Forsyth Medical Center for wonderful medical care given to W. T. in seeking to help him get well. And, a final heart-felt thank you is shared with the nurses, physicians, and staff of the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home for their compassion in helping W. T. come to the end of his earthly life with dignity and free of pain. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the "Resident Assistant Fund" of Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community, 1240 Arbor Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104, or to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Salem Funeral Home is assisting the Medlin family. Online condolences may be made through www.salemfh.com.
