Agnes Urbanas Obituary

Agnes W. Urbanas of Kingston peacefully passed away Saturday, Feb. 20, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. She was 100 years young.

Born in Bernice on Nov. 8, 1920, she was the daughter of Sebastian and Cecelia Kutas Wilkes. She was a graduate of Edwardsville High School. Upon graduation, she relocated to Philadelphia where she began her career with the Civil Service Administration. During World War II, she was employed by the Army Signal Corps and worked on the Manhattan Project. Afterward, she worked in a supervisory capacity on a team setting up the Tobyhanna Army Depot.

In 1953, she married Dr. Daniel J. Urbanas and they settled in Kingston, where she devoted herself to her family and various volunteer organizations. While a member of St. Hedwig's Parish, she chaired and served on numerous committees as a member of the Mother's Guild and choir. As a current member of St. Ignatius Parish, she enjoyed her role as a pierogi maker. She served on the CYC board of directors, the Wyoming Valley Dental Auxiliary and the Reymont Club. When her children were in college, she resumed her civil service career with the Social Security Administration until her retirement.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 53 years, Dr. Daniel J. Urbanas; brothers, Edward and Joseph Wilkes; sisters, Florence Desciak, Mildred Wilkes, Stella Stepniak, Elizabeth Tamalis and Josephine Wilkes.

She is survived by her children, Donna (Daniel) Slagle, Pittsburgh; Susan (J. Thomas) Lucey, Wilmington, N.C.; Daniel (Nancy), Freeland, Md.; Michael Scott, Jenkins Twp.; Lisa (Terrence) Breen, Stroudsburg; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; devoted sister, Marie Filipczyk; many nieces and nephews.

A walk-through visitation for friends and family will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at AJ Kopicki Funeral Home. Due to the ongoing pandemic, restrictions have been put in place. Those attending the visitation are asked to be brief when paying respects. Please follow the COVID-19 rules of wearing a mask and keeping social distance.

A celebration of life will occur at a future date.

We would like to extend our sincerest condolences to Agnes' family on hearing of her passing.

Whenever we saw and spoke with her, she was always a pleasure and she would share with you her wonderful smile.

Although we met her later in her life, one can only applaud Agnes in learning of what a life she led and it's befitting she attained becoming a centenarian, before joining the angels.

To Nancy, Jen, Donna and all of Agnes' family, we hope you find solace in the days to come as she's blessed in peace. Agnes is always with you.
