Eleanor Adonizio Obituary

Eleanor Berti Adonizio, 98, of Pittston, passed away Tuesday, July 28, 2020, peacefully at her home.

She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Irene Borocci Berti. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 52 years, Phillip M. Adonizio; a daughter, Darlene Adonizio; brothers, Joseph Berti and Louis Berti; and daughter-in-law, Carol Adonizio.

Surviving are her sons, Phillip Adonizio, Hanover Twp.; and Robert Adonizio (Sara), Clarks Summit and Myrtle Beach; and daughter, Mary Lou Ames (Dennis), Brookville. Also surviving are six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and her closest and dearest friend whom she considered a sister, Stella Centrella.

Eleanor was born in West Pittston on Feb. 5, 1922, and graduated from West Pittston High School in 1939. She then graduated from The Business College of Washington, D.C., in 1941. Upon graduation, she began immediate employment with the United States Pentagon, where she served as a clerical secretary and was promoted to confidential secretary. During her years at the Pentagon, she prepared confidential documents for the Department of Treasury, the Attorney General and even President Roosevelt. After raising her four children, she began employment in the Tax Assessors Office at the Luzerne County Courthouse. She loved her job and her co-workers.

Eleanor knew her husband, Phil, from the time they were young children. During their youth and teenage years, both she and Phil would often say they knew that someday they would be married. In their later years, Eleanor and Phil enjoyed many bus trips throughout the U.S., most of them sponsored by Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. One of her great joys was her trip to Italy to visit the home where her father was born and visit the towns where both her parents were born.

Eleanor was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. She was fluent in the Italian language and one of her greatest passions was cooking the foods of her Italian heritage. She was well known for her homemade pasta, ravioli, cappeletti, fine noodles, biscotti and many beautiful dishes. She was so proud to teach her children and grandchildren these traditions which they carry on today. She loved all music, especially Tommy Dorsey and other Big Bands and Italian music. She had a beautiful voice and she could be heard singing any time of the day.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to Tracey Curry, Eleanor's long-time in-home health care worker, as well as Kathy Lokuta, who also assisted her. In the last year of her life, Eleanor was cared for by Sheryl Luvender Ross, who actually moved into the family home to care for her. Eleanor came to depend on Sheryl for not only the necessities, but as a loving, caring companion whom Eleanor loved like a daughter. The family will be eternally grateful to Sheryl for the love and care she provided. The family also wishes to thank all of the wonderful hospice nurses of Bayada Health Care, especially nurse, Cheryl Haines.

The family will receive friends and relatives, following the CDC guidelines of wearing a face covering and maintaining social distance, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Adonizio Funeral Home LLC, 251 William St., Pittston.

Funeral services will be held with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joseph Marello Parish and interment in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Bayada Hospice, 529 Seven Bridge Road, Suite 214, East Stroudsburg, PA 18301.
