Ernest Gerfin Obituary

Ernest R. Gerfin, M.D., 82, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2023, at his home in Lenox Twp. after a lengthy illness.

His wife, Nancy Fletcher Gerfin, preceded him in death.

Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late Ernest and Jean Cover Gerfin. He was a graduate of Franklin & Marshall College and completed medical school at George Washington University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a physician and owner of Gerfin Medical Group in Clarks Summit. Prior to his work in bariatric medicine, Dr. Gerfin was a pathologist. He was a Mason and member of Waverly Lodge 301.

Dr. Gerfin loved woodworking, duck decoys, duck and goose hunting, and was an avid reader of history. He could often be found doing physics problems with a bottle of wine.

Surviving are a son, Dale Gerfin and wife, Nancy, Lenox Twp.; and grandchildren, Jesse and Rachael Gerfin.

The family would like to thank Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their compassionate care along with Dr. Carl Birsigian of Hematology and Oncology Associates in Dunmore, the Moses Taylor outpatient infusion team and his caregivers.

A Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit. Friends and family may pay their respects from 5 p.m. until the time of the service.

To the family of Dr. Gerfin. We are so saddened to hear about his passing. We had no idea until I just happened to read it on Facebook. Dr. Gerfin was a kind, caring doctor and wonderful friend to both my husband and myself. We will miss him for sure. May he rest in peace.

I had the pleasure of working as a caregiver for Nancy Gerfin. After she passed, Dr. Gerfin asked if I would stay on along with Sally and work for him. We had some good conversations about life. He was a very smart, knowledgeable man. May he Rest in Peace. My prayers for Dale, Nancy and their family. Donna Winnie

This man was so wonderful I remember I was going to him faithfully every month. Paying by check. I stopped going to him for 3 months. Then I went back. He told me that my last check had bounced. I said sorry and I would pay it in cash right now. He said ok. Then I went in the room and he asked what was going on with me. I explained my 4 year old son got hit by a car and had to get life flighted to Danville. After telling him all the details. He said that was your boy? I seen it on the news. I came out of the room and he ripped up the bounced check and said don’t worry about your last visit or this one. Go take care of your boy. He made my heart warm that day. Never have I ever came across a person so caring in my life. What a great, wonderful, man.
