Henry Anthony Kowalski, 82, of Glen Lyon, passed away Monday, Dec. 20, 2021, at Allied Services Hospice Center, Wilkes-Barre, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was the husband of JoAnn Shutta and celebrated 58 years of marriage in July.
Born July 24, 1939, in Mocanaqua, he was the son of the late Helen Ciglarski and the late Walter Kowalski. One of 10 children, Henry was the second to last. He attended schools in Shickshinny, Mocanaqua and Newport Twp. After high school, Henry joined the Navy Reserve, then served in the Army from 1958 to 1960. He worked in the Country Cousins shoe factory, Mocanaqua, Glen-Nan Coal Company for 8 years, then worked for state corrections at SCI Dallas for 28 years, retiring in 2000.
Henry was known for his prowess in deer hunting and enjoyed it all his life with his three sons, then with his grandchildren - girls included! Henry also loved trips to the farm, sitting on the front porch with his binoculars and watching all the classic cowboys shows on television. Henry always loved a full house. From holiday celebrations to coffee visits with his buddy, Frank, everyone was welcome in the Kowalski kitchen. Henry loved to cook and it was a joy for him to make breakfast for the grandkids and let them order whatever they liked - from homemade rollups to sausage and fresh eggs from the farm.
In addition to his wife, Henry is survived by his sons, Daniel (Leona) Kowalski; James (Paula) Kowalski; Richard (Corrina) Kowalski; two bonus daughters-in-law, Dianne Kowalski and Tammy Taylor; six grandchildren, Jason (Kindra), Matthew, Shannon, Katie (Mark), Nicholas and Tyler; and one great-granddaughter, Gabby. Henry is also survived by two sisters, Irene Namowicz and Florence DeScipio; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to Dr. Greenwald and the nurses and aids from Medical Oncology Associates and Allied Hospice for their care and compassion.
A visitation will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at George A. Strish Inc. Funeral Home, 211 W. Main St., Glen Lyon. I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Hank. He was an exceptional guy and one of the great Moc boys! His sister and I were friends in high school and when I would go to pick her up to go to school, Hank was always there and was very kind to me. Rest in peace, my hometown friend,
