Jeanne Izenberg Handman

1927 - 2021

A woman of great energy and "talking hands," Jeanne Izenberg Handman, 94, died Monday, Nov. 8, 2021.

Recently a resident of Highland Park Senior Living, she was born in Paterson, N.J. on May 16, 1927, the daughter of the late Lillian Fortinsky Izenberg and David W. Izenberg.

A 1944 graduate of Eastside High School in Paterson, she attended Hood College, graduating in June 1948. After marrying Edgar Handman later that June at Temple Emanuel in Paterson, they relocated to Philadelphia while Edgar completed his collegiate education. After Edgar's graduation, they returned to Paterson where their two sons were born. In 1958, they moved to Kingston, where they were associated with her family business, Newark Silk Company.

A stay-at-home mother, Jeanne was a member of Temple Israel, Hadassah, the National Council of Jewish Women and started playing tennis at Valley Tennis and Swim Club. This was all B.F. (Before Flood).

After the Hurricane Agnes flood of June 1972, (A.F.) they temporarily relocated to Wilkes-Barre. In 1973, she and Edgar moved back to New Jersey, this time residing in Hackensack, where they re-joined Temple Emanual. Jeanne spent these years as a salesperson at several women's boutiques and playing tennis.

In 2000, she and Edgar began retirement in Boca Raton, Fla., where, after Edgar's death in 2011, she lived until 2017 when she moved back to Northeastern Pennsylvania.

She was predeceased by her brother, Jesse A. Izenberg.

She is survived by her sons and their wives, Carl and Francie Handman, Kingston; and John and Judi Handman, Glen Rock, N.J.; four grandchildren, David; Allison; Adam and his wife, Amy; and Lindsay Handman. She is also survived by Adam and Amy's three sons, Max, Oliver and Jake; sister-in-law, Nina R. Izenberg; and nieces.

Jeanne's family would like to thank the staff at Bayada Hospice and at Highland Park Senior Living for the love and care they provided her over the past several years.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Temple Emanual of North Jersey Cemetery, 380-386 Dewey Ave., Passaic Junction, Saddle Brook, N.J. Rabbi Alvin Kass, chief chaplain of the NYPD will officiate. Shiva will not be observed.
