Joseph Delinsky Obituary

Joseph L. Delinsky, 81, of Edwardsville, died Friday, March 25, 2022, at Kingston Health Care Center, Kingston.

Born in Nanticoke on March 24, 1941, he was the son of the late John and Anna Nickett Delinsky.

Joe was a 1958 graduate of Edwardsville High School. After graduation, he was granted a half-tuition football scholarship to King's College, Wilkes-Barre, receiving his bachelor's degree in 1962.

He earned his master's degree from Bloomsburg University in 1970. He participated in the National Defense Education Act Institute at Knox College, Galesburg, Ill. He also completed graduate studies at the University of Wichita, Kan./Puebla, Mexico, and at the University of Madrid, Spain.

Joe began teaching Spanish at Edwardsville High School in 1962. While teaching at Edwardsville High School, he was appointed head football coach and assistant basketball coach from 1963 to 1966, working with his dear friend, Chester Vonsavage. Their 1964 football team became co-champions of the West Side Football Conference. He completed his 39-year teaching career at Wyoming Valley West High School. He retired in 2001, having touched the lives of thousands of students by teaching them not only about Spanish, but about life. For Joe, teaching was not only a career, but a natural and heartfelt expression of who he was.

Joe was a caring and compassionate person, always willing to help others, especially his three daughters and their families.

In addition to spending time with his family and friends, some of his joys in life were observing the beauty of nature, fishing, gardening and talking with people wherever he went.

He traveled throughout most of the U.S., much of it tent camping with his daughters and ex-wife. He admired natural wonders, including Glacier National Park, Mt. St. Helen's and Crater Lake.

Blessed with energy, he kept busy physically. Joe hand-built the house in which his daughters were raised in Dallas. He enjoyed caring for their ten acres of gardens, land and fruit trees.

Joe will be remembered for his delicious apple and pumpkin pies, which he generously shared.

Joe had been a member of St. John's Russian Orthodox church, Edwardsville, and a member of churches in the Back Mountain area.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Marie Souchick; and his brothers, John and Michael Delinsky.

He is survived by his daughters, Cindi Delinsky, Karen Delinsky and Kathy Rogers and her husband, Chris. He cherished his three grandchildren, Jack Hagebak, Jamie Rogers and Jillian Rogers. He also had many treasured nieces, nephews and cousins.

In honor of Joe's love for nature, a public celebration of his life will be held outdoors this summer. Details will be announced at a future date.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Hugh B. Hughes & Son Inc. Funeral Home, Forty Fort.

Joe was admired for his appreciation for the simple and meaningful things in life. So instead of flowers or donations, his family suggests honoring him by doing something to brighten someone else's day. Bake a pie for a neighbor, make a phone call just to say hello or share a smile with a stranger. Joe's spirit lives on through our acts of kindness.

It was so sad to hear that Uncle Joe passed away. I always tried to visit with him when I came home once a year for vacation. Uncle Joe was always interested in how my family was doing, especially my two kids. For several years he paid the yearly subscription for their favorite kids beginner-reading magazine which they both enjoyed. His stories were always interesting, as he had traveled to so many places and knew so many people. Uncle Joe always seemed happy, and I never heard him say a bad word about anyone. He would go out of his way to help people. Such a wonderful, interesting person and role model. May he rest in peace with Grandma, Uncle John, Uncle Mike, and my Mom.

I was so sad to hear of Joe's passing. So many great memories of making the coleslaw and Apple pies and teaching him to make real turkey gravy. Talking to him for hours about everything. He was a great man willing to help everyone and anyone. RIP Joe

Adding to the message & photos I sent 4/4/2022.
Those 4 photos were taken some time in the 90's.
How time flies. They show 4 Amigos from high school (class of 1958) Ed Grigor, George Mital, Bill
Markovitz, & Joe Delinsky hanging out at his cabin on the Delaware River having a great time together on a very rainy weekend. Wow! Two Amigos were great teachers, & two were smart IBMers. One (Bill), was the best man at my wedding. I am the only Amigo left. Until I pass, I will never forget them. I can't say enough about them. God bless them. Memories are a blessing to cherish. I am really emotional about this. Again, my deepest sympathies go out to Joe's family.

An outstanding educator and the definition of the word "gentleman". He helped me prepare for the National Spanish Exam at King's College during my Sophomore and Juniors years, both of which I placed 2nd. My condolences to the Delinsky family during this tragic time.

Senior Delinsky, Rest In Peace! What a fabulous teacher he was, such personality. I loved watching his family trip across the country at the end of the year. My heart goes out to his family - he was so very proud of you! God bless you all and may you find peace over time where feelings of gratefulness overcome the terrible loss that you feel today. My heart and prayers go out to you.

To the family of Joseph Delinsky,
Sadly, I just found out about the passing of Joe. I am so sorry for your loss. Joe was a great classmate & Friend. I will always remember the fun times we had working together as car hops at Kearney's BBQ in 1957 & 1958, and the fishing & camping get togethers we had at his cabin on the Delaware River (see attached photos). Good times that you can't forget. Rest in peace Joe. May God Bless you & have mercy on you. "Adios Amigo Adios". With my deepest sympathy to all of you. Ed Grigor (Classmate EHS 1958) I am also mourning another classmate, my lovely wife Rosemarie who passed away 11/15/2021.

We are so sorry for your loss. Your Dad was a valued friend and is one of the fond memories of the years we lived in the back mountain. He treasured the love of his family and friends. He could sit and talk for hours and hours with such enthusiasm about whatever subject came up. May God give you comfort with all the wonderful memories that you and friends have of him.

I was sorry to hear of Joe's passing. He was a neighbor of mine for many years. Always had a smile and a wave when he saw you. We were the recipients of his delicious apple pies.
He will be missed. RIP Joe

Senor Delinsky taught me Spanish, but more about life. I can still hear him addressing the class by saying "clase" He stressed the importance of protecting your hands with manual work. People often tell me how soft my hands are even though I did construction with my dad for years. I credit Senor for teaching me to protect my hands with gloves. His Earthquake story was unforgettable. He was an incredible person and made a huge impact to many of our loves. God bless his family and may he rest in peace for eternity.

Cindi, Karen and Kathy,
My sincere condolences on the loss of your father. Uncle Joe was such a special and caring man. He made us all smile bringing us apple pies and blueberries in good times and bad. I was lucky to ask him for that apple pie recipe and will always think of him each time I make a pie. He was always there to help my family and I can´t thank him enough for that. He loved watching the Penn state football games and talking about family. His absence will be felt by our family for years to come.
With deepest sympathy,
Ann Marie Souchick

We were deeply saddened to hear the news of Uncle Joe's passing. He was a wonderful and caring man who was always there for my Mom and Dad in their time of need, and just simply when he stopped by for his company. We will miss his apple and pumpkin pies, and the great conversations we had when he visited my Dad's house. Both my Dad and I offer our sincerest condolences. He will be greatly missed.

He was my Spanish teacher at WVW. I'll always remember how eager we were to hear his "earthquake story" every year. He will be missed. RIP Senor Delinsky.

My sincere condolences for his family. He was my Spanish teacher through high school and the absolute sweetest man. He was genuine and interesting... and funny. I have great memories of him as one of my favorite teachers.

Jean's and my heartfelt sympathy goes out to the Delinsky family. Joe and I were friends from Meyers Street Elementary School on through King's College and beyond. Joe was an absolute gentleman who was a "tough as nails" football player, but in his personal life, didn't have a mean bone in his body. I spent a lot of time in his company and can't remember a time that he was mean-spirited or lost his temper. I'm sure his students could attest to that. He really made a difference in thousands of lives. So, all I can say is "Rest in well-deserved Peace," to our dear friend.
