Lillian T. Balas, 90, of the Sheatown section of Newport Twp., went on her journey Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2021, a patient at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Twp.
Born April 29, 1931, in Nanticoke, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Lottie Konczynski Kwiatkowski. She graduated from Nanticoke High School, Class of 1949, and early in life worked at General Cigar Company where she met her husband, Martin. They were married April 25, 1953, and shared 60 years of marriage until his death on Aug. 13, 2013.
Lillian was employed as a dietary aide at the former St. Stanislaus Nursing Home, later becoming Mercy Health Care Center, in Sheatown. She retired in 1996 after 24 years.
She was a member of St. Faustina Kowalska Parish, Nanticoke, and formerly Holy Trinity Church. She and Marty enjoyed several cruises over the years and were blessed to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on a Caribbean cruise. In her spare time she enjoyed hidden word puzzles and was a fan of Penn State football and Duke basketball.
In addition to her husband, Marty, she was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Kwiatkowski.
Surviving are her daughters, Linda Meshinski and husband, Robert, Nuangola; and Cheryl Honeywell and husband, Michael, Allentown; grandson and "second love of her life," Ryan Meshinski and wife, Lindsey, Plains Twp.; brother, Henry Kwiatkowski, Sacramento, Calif.; as well as nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her close friends and neighbors, Marge and Ron Womelsdorf, Amanda, Douglas and Jimmy.
The family extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Patrick Kerrigan and staff for the wonderful care they provided.
A blessing service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday from Davis-Dinelli Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad St., Nanticoke. Interment will follow in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Sheatown. Viewing and visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service Monday at the funeral home.
