Marilyn Sobeck-Martin Obituary

Marilyn R. (Kane) Sobeck-Martin, 84, of Luzerne, passed away Tuesday, June 21, 2016, in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital following a brief illness.

Born the daughter of the late Peter Joseph Kane and Helen F. (Ford) Kane, she resided in Kingston until her marriage to her first husband, E. "Jim" Sobeck Jr., who passed away July 9, 1982. She was also predeceased by her second husband, William J. Martin, on Nov. 10, 2004. Her father unfortunately passed away when Marilyn was only eight months old and she was raised by her working mother, her grandmother and her aunt, Margaret R. Ford. Her first cousin, the late Rosemary (Collins) Balchun, was also raised with her following her own mother's passing.

She was a proud graduate of Kingston High School, Class of 1949, and was involved on all of the reunion committees until recently. She also attended Wyoming Seminary Business School and, prior to her first marriage, was employed by the offices of the American Stores Warehouse, Forty Fort. After raising her five children, she was a founding officer of the Sobeck Corp., Wyoming, along with her husband, Jim, and sons, Mark, Frank and Bob. Marilyn was also actively involved, until age 79, with her sons, Frank and Bob, in the operation of Roof Pro Inc., Wyoming.

She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchild very much. She was their biggest fan at any sporting or school events that she was able to attend.

Marilyn was a devoted Catholic and member of Holy Family Church, Luzerne. She was also an active member, president and officer of many organizations, such as the former St. John Nepomucene Church Mothers Club, West Side Central Catholic and Bishop O'Reilly High School Mothers Club, Luzerne Lions Club Women's Auxiliary and the Boy Scouts of America in Luzerne. She was also a former enthusiastic member of the Women's Bowling League of St. John's Nepomucene Church, Luzerne.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Jim; her second husband, Bill; and her beloved brother, Frank J. Kane, in 1993. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She is survived by her sons, Jim Sobeck and wife, Cindy, Mark Sobeck and wife, Debbie, Frank Sobeck and wife, Joline, and Bob Sobeck and wife, Meri-Ellyn; her beloved daughter, Mary Lynn Pizzolato and husband, Bill; grandchildren, Jimmy, Thomas and Jillian Sobeck, Mike, Rich and Jenn Sobeck, Nick Sobeck and Jake Pizzolato; great-grandson, Wesley Sobeck; and cousins.

Viewing will be held in Holy Family Church, 574 Bennett St., Luzerne, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

The family will also receive visitors from 9 to 9:45 a.m. in the church prior to the Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated by personal friend, the Rev. Louis Grippe, at 10 a.m. Friday.

Interment will follow immediately after in St. John Nepomucene Cemetery, Courtdale.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital; Good Shepherd Academy, Kingston; or to a charity of the donor's choice.

The family would like to sincerely thank the clergy, Monsignor John Bendik, who was a childhood friend, Monsignor John Sempa, a personal friend, the Rev. Leo McKernan, the Rev. Peter Tomczak and the Rev. Long of Kings College, who was the hospital chaplain, along with all of the home health agencies and care providers, especially Home Instead Senior Care of Luzerne and its wonderful aides/caregivers and staff. We would also like to thank the medical professionals, nurses, aides/sitters that were kind to our mother during recent stay at the hospital. All of these caregivers, aides/sitters are most welcome to attend the services and luncheon to follow at the Woodlands Inn, Plains Township.
