Thomas Tryba Obituary

Thomas J. Tryba Sr., 72, of Hanover Green, passed away in Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township, on Thursday, May 26, 2011.

Thomas was born March 22, 1939, to the late George and Sophie Bienias Tryba. His brother, George Jr., passed away Oct. 16, 1961.

A Hanover Township resident his entire life, he graduated from Hanover High School, Penn State University and King's College. He taught as a high school math teacher and golf coach for more than 30 years. He also served as a board member for Hanover Area School District and most recently as Hanover's golf coach.

Thomas was first a caddie and then a longtime member of Wyoming Valley Country Club, where he served as a board member. He was also very involved in the community, volunteering with the Civic Improvement Council and was a life member of Exaltation of the Holy Cross Church, Hanover Township, where he was a member of the Men's Club.

In acknowledgement of his love and lifetime contributions to high school golf, the Tom Tryba Preseason High School Golf Tournament is held in his honor prior to the start of each golf season.

Above all, he was devoted to his family and a loyal friend and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with those he loved whether at home or while traveling.

He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Lorraine Kraynak Tryba; sons, Thomas Jr., Hanover Green; and Ted, Orlando, Fla.; daughters, Tammie and her husband, Donald Robbins, Wyoming; and Teri Lynn and her husband, Jeffrey Braun, Las Vegas, Nev.; grandchildren, Tiffany, Felicia, Thomas III (TJ) and Tegan; and a great-grandchild.

Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday from Charles V. Sherbin Funeral Home, Hanover Green, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Exaltation of the Holy Cross Church, Buttonwood. Interment will be in the parish cemetery, West Nanticoke. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 6 to 9 p.m. Monday.

Mr. Tryba taught me at Coughlin many years ago. Sitting in the front of the classroom, he seemed like such an intimidating figure. As the year went on, I realized that in fact he was a gentle giant. My very deepest sympathies to his entire family. He was a teacher who definitely made an impression on me, not just with math, but life lessons as well.

The consummate family man, Tom worked hard from a humble beginning to becoming a success as a father, teacher, coach and civic leader. Whether making a fruit basket to distribute for needy families at Christmas, helping his church raise funds, or helping a young man with his golf swing he always had a smile coupled with a manner that made one feel better about themselves. His passing is a great sadness for all who knew him...

Mrs. Tryba and children,
I was very sadenned to hear of the passing of your husband and father. I feel like I knew him all my life. I babysat all 4 of the children for many years. Though out of the area for a long time, I still have such fond memories of him across the street from my parent's home, hitting golf balls. I know he is a great loss to his family and will be greatly missed by the Hanover Green Community. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Mrs.Tryba abd Family:
My deepest sympathies on the passing of Mr.Tryba. I was one of the fortunate ones that took his Algebra class at J.M.Coughlin High School in the 60's. He was an "awesome" teacher with a great sense of humor, something that I learned from him and used to benefit my career as a high school teacher for 36 years in Groton, Ct. I remember meeting up with him at the GHO in Cromwell, Ct when Ted was a pro golfer! He remembered me and recalled our class as if it were yesterday! I was impressed and enjoyed my conversation with him. Actually, I even had the pleasure of speaking with Ted that weekend.
I will remember him in my thoughts and prayers. He was a great teacher and an even better man! May his soul rest in peace!
