Donn Harling Obituary

b) 11-26-1927 Waterloo, IA d) 01-11-2013 Topeka, KS Survived by children Kristie Kronlage, Donn N. Harling Jr., Georgia Penko, grandson Josh Penko, great grandsons Joshua and Jeremiah and his dearest friends, Harold and Carol Benoit. Donn served our nation from 1944 to 1969 as a Radio Officer, retiring with the rank of Commander from the US Merchant Marine. Between wars, he achieved success in FM radio and in the early era of computers at Technicolor - Hollywood. After leaving the service, he continued at Technicolor while developing his interests and passions in dog breeding, dog shows, aviation, great food and wine. His fascination with canine nutrition led him to Science Diet and he retired from Hill s in 1989 as Director of Marketing, after working in Van Nuys, CA, Las Vegas, NV and finally in Topeka, KS. He owned Harling s Wine & Spirits for many years and after its closing, worked for Kaw Valley Bank until his death. He was complex, could be difficult, and will be missed. In memoriam, contributions may be made to the American Merchant Marine Veterans organization at AMMV, P.O. Box 186, Ferndale, CA 95536-0186 or any of the Liberty or Victory Ship Museum Organizations around the nation.
