Dear Lottie, I was reading the Prairie Harvester, (which I seldom do) and noticed that your Doug had passed away. It came as a rather sudden realization that two of my best friends, Doug and Fred Stidham are now with the Lord. What a trio of trouble we made when we decided to do stuff together at Prairie. Sometimes we stayed at his folks too late and ad to sneak in a window in order to get back in the dorm. We remember you both with such fondness, (and regret that we were so distanced from our getting together), It's hard to believe that 50 years have passed so quickly! Jan (Waldock), and I send our love and prayers. Jim & Jan Barnhart, [email protected]

Dear Lottie - I just heard today of Doug's passing and wanted to drop you a line on behalf of our family to express our sincere sympathies to you and your's. I have so many wonderful memories of both of you, of course, but specifically have fond memories of playing football with Doug and Dave Pulliam in their backyards up on Prairie Heights. Doug would give each of us "young punks" specific routes to follow, drawn on the palm of his hands, and away we would go looking for that "pass" to catch, run thru the small spruce trees that divided the Masterson's yard from the Pulliam's. What fun! Altho Doug was close to 10 years older than me/us, his gentle dismeanor/leadership made him a natural teacher and I always respected him and so looked forward to those "backyard battles." May you know Serenity and Strength during these difficult days. This song came to mind when I heard the news earlier today...

I have many memories of Doug during my High School / Bible School years at Prairie Bible Institute in Three Hills, Alberta Canada. We were "off campus staff kids" and enjoyed friendship with that in common. He will always be held in high esteem. What a kind and compassionate and healthy man. We have the common bond of Jesus Christ in our lives and I know he has shed his old body for a new and vibrant one. Loosing him makes our longing for heaven even greater.

I remember him as a great teacher and he made a bet with me way back in the fifth grade and I never paid him for the bet he won as it regarded to me later in my life. I never got to pay the debt I lost! Heaven has a great angel now! RIP!

Mr. Masterson was my 5th Grade teacher in 75/76, and will always be one of my favorites. He made class fun and interesting. I loved The Great Pickle Race, which lead to attending my first Royals game. I remember the candles he made for us, so we could give them to our parents for Christmas. He was a great man/teacher.

Doug was one of my favorite teachers I had. He made class enjoyable and took a special interest in his students. I was just talking about him to my grand kids last week. Things I remember the most is the model rocket, The Pickle Race and the trip to my first KC Royals game. I'm sure he touched and shaped so many lives being the great man that he was. Rest in Peace!

I am so sorry for your loss. I remember Mr. Masterson because he was my kids favorite substitute teacher. They were always so excited when he was subbing. My daughter who is 21 still has one of the candles he made for her. He was such a kind man.

I was fortunate to work with Doug years ago when I taught in Alma. Doug was a very special person. I will remember his laughter and easy going attitude that he brought to the carpooling group and classroom everyday. I appreciated all of the things I learned while working with him. He truly cared about others and he will missed.

Doug is at rest with Michael in the arms of Jesus. He was the most admirable of men, great father, husband to Leoti, and caretaker for many. I can't believe I'd forgotten how great his chocolate chip cookies were until Leoti mentioned them. But then there are many memories of this kind, gentle soul. Prayers for all.

I was deeply saddened by the news of Mr. Masterson's passing. He was an amazing teacher. I credit him with helping me find my love of journalism and writing. I have many, many fond memories of him not only while in the Fifth grade, but all my years at Alma Grade School and Wabaunsee High. He always welcomed any former student back into his classroom for a visit.
Sending prayers and peace to your family as you begin the journey without him here on Earth. I know he made a grand entrance as he meet the Lord.
