Jerrold Griffitts Obituary

OZAWKIE - Jerrold Dale Griffitts, 74, Ozawkie, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence. Jerry was born Sept. 26, 1929, on a farm near Old Qzawkie, the son of James Wallace Griffitts and Grace Elizabeth Hoff Griffitts. He was baptized in the First Presbyterian Church of Oskaloosa. He attended Ozawkie schools and graduated from Ozawkie High School in 1947. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953 in Korea. He was in the Military Police and Signal Corps. He guarded prisoners of war on Koje-Do Island. Jerry was a farmer and stockman and lived in the Ozawkie and Oskaloosa area most of his life. He married Patti Nutsch Schropp. She survives, of the home. Other survivors include two sons, Kim Griffitts, Oskaloosa, and Scott Griffitts, Ozawkie; one daughter, Candace Braksick, McLouth; three sisters, Eileen Bennett, Littleton, Colo., Elaine Lindenman, Kansas City, Kan. and Audrey Coghlin, Chicago; one brother, Alvin Griffitts, of Alaska; an d six grandchildren, Gabe and Brad Griffitts, Staci and Sherri Braksick, and Patrick and Christopher Griffitts. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, James Griffitts; and a sister, Phyllis June Griffitts. Jerry was very proud of his family and always put them first. He was an avid card player and especially enjoyed poker, pitch and bridge. He was a life member of the American Legion No. 225 at Ozawkie and a life member of the VFW Post. No. 10815, at Meriden. He was a member of the Lucky Spur Saddle Club, the Kansas State Horse Show Circuit, served on the Oskaloosa City Council and was a member of the Oskaloosa Bridge Club. He was a charter member of the Oskaloosa Lions Club. Memorial services for Jerrold Griffitts will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Oskaloosa. A visitation will follow the services at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Presbyterian Church of Oskaloosa, the Jefferson County Historical Society or the Jeffer son County Hospice in care of Barnett Funeral Home, P.O. Box 416, Oskaloosa, Kan., 66066.
