Megan Alden Obituary

Megan Wiechert Alden, beloved wife of David Alden, and cherished mother of Alexa (age 9) and Nadia (age 6) of Topeka, KS, passed away December 3rd, 2011, at Midland Care Hospice in Topeka, KS. She was surrounded by family and friends as her struggle with cancer ended peacefully. Megan was born in Lawrence, KS, October 9th, 1971. She graduated from Lawrence High School in 1990, and continued on to receive a B.S. in Criminal Justice from American University in Washington, DC. During this time, she spent several memorable summers as a staff member at Philmont Scout Ranch located near Cimarron, NM. She was president of her sorority, Delta Gamma, and continued to be active as an alumna in the Delta Gamma chapter affiliated with Washburn University. Megan and Dave were married on September 20th, 1997 in Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. They resided in Vienna, Virginia until life took them to Denver, CO in 1999. Professionally, Megan continued her career as a paralegal, finishing with the Denver law firm of Holland & Hart, LLP where she telecommuted from her home office in Topeka until shortly before her death. One of Megan's true loves was spending time in the Colorado mountains where she spent countless hours camping, skiing, and hiking with her friends, family and dogs. Megan's smile and laughter always made people feel warm inside and will be missed by all who knew her. Survivors include her husband David; their two daughters, Alexa and Nadia; her parents Sandra and Allen Wiechert of Lawrence, KS; her sister Kirstin and husband Gerry Novak, their children Ainsley and Addison of Overland Park; her brother Brendan and wife Deborah, their children Emma and Calen of Spokane, WA; her Uncle John and wife Janan Swanson of Casa Grande, AZ; her Grandmother Serena Wiechert Eastburn of Lawrence, KS; and extended family all over the US. Megan's Celebration of Life Service will be held at: Countryside United Methodist Church, Sunday December 11th, 2011 at 5pm. In lieu of flowers, Megan's last request was for contributions to be made to Megan's Fund to be used to support Alexa's and Nadia's college education. Megan's Fund/CoreFirst Bank and Trust, 3035 S. David, Lexie, and Nadia,
Matt and I send our prayers and thoughts to you in the loss of such a wonderful woman. We were shocked at the news and know she will be missed.
I remember her involvement with our Upward basketball team. Lexie, you did her proud with how good you played. Nadia, we couldn't have asked for a better mascot. David, thank you for helping this novice coach.
You have a great family and I am glad that our lives crossed paths if for only a brief while.
There are no words to say except we love you all.

I do not know Megan personally, but thru my daughter, Jennie Watts, who is a DG, I have learned of the connection and bond that sorority sisters share. I am so sorry for your loss of a beautiful young woman who faught her battle so courageously. Many wonderful memories have been made and will be with you forever. Please know that my, and many others, thoughts and prayers are with you. God bless you.
