Michael Brunton Obituary

Michael F. Brunton Michael Fred Brunton, Topeka bankruptcy attorney and lifelong resident, passed away March 24, 2011, while working in his law office. He was born on Sept. 15, 1948, to Charles Ray Brunton and Margaret Jane Brunton Smith. Michael attended Sunny Elevation Grade School and Washburn Rural High School, graduating from Topeka West High School in 1966. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1969 and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, during the Vietnam War before being honorably discharged in 1972. After finishing his military service, he earned a bachelor's degree in Philosophy from Washburn University and a law degree from Washburn University School of Law. He began his career as an attorney in criminal law and later shifted his focus to bankruptcy law, a practice in which he thrived. He's received some unconventional compensation for his services over the years, including a gun collection, a 1970's pickup truck, several microwaves and a Lhasa Apso named Dahli, which survives him. In June of 1978 he married Janet Bullard. In his free time, Michael enjoyed playing and listening to music. He was a singer/songwriter and was guitarist for the Bruce Levine Memorial Dance Band while attending law school. He was also an enthusiastic grandfather, teller of tall tales and an avid Jayhawks basketball fan. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Janet Brunton; a son, Bryan Brunton and his wife, Natalia, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; four daughters, Kara Stranz and her husband, Ken, of Olathe, Erin Bess Pennington and her husband, Joe, of Topeka, Terra Brunton her husband, Doug, of Lawrence, Marlee Brunton and her fiancee Chris Hrenko of Montpelier, Vt.; a sister, Dr. Jolee Brunton and husband, Ken Loyst, of San Diego, Calif.; 10 grandchildren and counting and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents and his stepfather Dr. Lawrence Smith. A memorial service will be held at Jayhawk Tower in the Florentine room on Thursday at 3 p.m. with a reception following from 4 to 5 p.m. Parking is available across the street at Assumption School. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent in his name to the American Civil Liberties Union at http://action.aclu.org. Michael F. Brunton

Uncle Mike, thank you for being there for me. Your kindness was always felt by my family and I, and you'll certainly be missed. When I heard of your passing, I was completely in shock. Please give my mom a kiss from me, will you. And our little Zachariah as well.
Aunt Janet, I am sorry I could not make the service, but you all have been in my prayers all week. Be strong.
Love you all...

Michael did 'coffee break' better than any 20th Century person save possibly Oscar Wilde. He played Linebacker with more passion than Ronnie Lott, joined in a music jam with the innocence of a child Irish whistle-player, and embraced life with the death-grip of a cancer survivor. I know Michael as a larger-than-life man that tried to fit himself into a more-humble-than-me space. And I will always thank him for being my friend.

My wife Patty and I enjoyed the service, which was standing room only, on Thursday afternoon. The music, poetry, and eulogies were great...a fitting tribute to a great guy. May Mike rest in peace, in heaven, for all eternity

Jolee, Jan, and family,

I am so sorry for the loss of Michael. In high school he was the big brother I never had, and we shared many great times together during and after those years.
He inspired me to succeed in the things that truly mattered in life, and to genuinely appreciate and savor the precious moments life gives us.
His talents were many, and he will be greatly missed.

Michael,

In the 40 years I was privileged to call you friend, you always fought the good fight. Know that the world is a better place, for the path you took. You moved on, way too soon, but your spirit will endure in the hearts and minds, of the lives you touched.

Rest in Peace old friend …. You earned it.

Mike you were truly one of a kind and have touched so many lives greatly. We have suffered a great loss by loosing you. You have taught me so much in the last 4 years and being here without you just doesn't seem right. You were truly gone before your time. I'll never forget your whimsical jokes that we heard a million times a day, when someone asked how you were doing you always replied well I'm vertical, or a client came in with her mom and you would say oh is this your sister? I'll never forget our daily arguments, even though you always said Elizabeth you are right but fought for the client anyways. Mike I pray that you are looking down on me and are just smiling and I will do my absolute best to see that your legacy lives on and that I treat clients the way you would have.

Over the past decade, I've had the opportunity to observe Mike in Court passionately arguing for his clients. He stood up for those that many attorneys would not have had the time of day for. He was an attorney who genuinely cared about his clients. My sincere condolences to his family, staff, and clients.
