This man wasn't only my NCO,more importantly he was my friend and my motivator. The small precious years I got to spend with him will never be forgotten.

Well, I´m 20. Just so you know I´m definitely not with him anymore. Or anyone for that matter. I´m ok with it though. I´m 2 years into my associates degree for automotive technology now. One year left to go. I´ve definitely learned a lot but can still learn more. I started a new job as a fabricator. This means I measure, cut, and weld metal to be basic. I made a table last week. It was pretty cool. I hope you´d be proud of me.
Happy Father´s Day, daddy.
I miss you.

Hey, I´m 18 now. I got my first car back in march. I started my first semester of college this past august. And I just moved out yesterday. I´ve made new friends, and I have a boyfriend whom I´d hope you´d approve, he´s kinda going to be around for a while. I miss you, especially now. Hope you´re having a good time where you´re at.
love

P.s. don´t worry, I´m keeping our last name:)

Gist, I had the pleasure and honor of serving with you in Basic Training at Ft. Knox. You were the rock of our platoon and I consider you our real Platoon Guide. I was 17 at the time you looked up to you for strength because I was scared. You were genuinely an inspiration to me at this time. I remember you telling me the struggle you went through to join the Army and when I heard you made the ultimate sacrifice, my heart hurt for you and your family. I remember the last time I saw you was in Virginia at Ft. Lee. You introduced me to your beautiful wife and sweet daughter that you were holding in your arms and very proud of. Love ya Buddy. Thankyou!!

Hey, it's me Jendayah. I'm 16 now. I remember i used to dream about being this old haha, i wish dreams were more realistic though bc in one of my dreams you were here. I wonder how different things would be if you were here. Oh and don't worry I don't have a bf and I don't really mind it. I miss you so much. Now that i think about it it's somewhat weird to say ily to a man I hardly remember and the crazy thing is I do. I love you.

Love your favorite daughter

We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this holiday season and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and hometown of Milton Anthony Gist Jr. US Army Sergeant.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families and friends and others who support our mission.

We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Hey it's me again. School started earlier this month and I'm doing ok. It's a lot different than before so I'm trying to get used to it and be as helpful as I can. I'm going to be 16 soon in abt 4 months but I don't think I'll really do anything. I'm sure you know about all the changes going on right now. And yea it's hard but that's what life is. I'm trying a new outlook on life which is trying to be more positive it's working out ok-ish. I'm also trying to be more open towards people but I don't really like the fact that not everyone just wants to be friends. Well I love you and I miss you too.

Love, your
not so little anymore baby girl

Hey Milton whats up man! Hey I have very few words for a friend that could make me listen to all day. When we were is elementary he was the coolest guy and even on into high school. I can honestly say that I have had the honor to know one of the best kind of people on the planet, so this news hurts A LOT. If I could be made to believe you were gone fellow, then I know you no doubt made it an honorable one. We need more people like you out there/here. There are PLENTY of us you have touched forever, and we still speak on it, you will not be forgotten friend. God Bless His Family!

Sweetpea, I dont think I have written on here since we first lost you. I read one entry on here about how one of your comrades helped bring you off the field. That was really hard for me to read. I miss you very much, but I always think about you. I think about when we were kids playing kick ball in Mommas front yard down on Howard. I think about how I would babysit you, Tony, and Ballhead and eat your food while playing your Mommas albums all night. Those were good times. When I want to smile about you I think about those times. I love you always little cousin.

To the family of SGT Milton A. Gist:

Four years ago today, Milton and I shared a few hours together. I had the tremendous honor of bringing him off the battlefield for the final time.
I hope my words have some good meaning to them and may provide some ease on what is the worst day ever for you.
The news came over the radio of the explosion quickly and that there were casualties. From that moment on, the anguish, confusion and uncertainty literally was the way the rest of the afternoon felt to me.
We arrived at the site and brought Milton to my vehicle after seeing the scene of the explosion.
He was carried by myself and another soldier to our vehicle and placed carefully inside onto one of the empty seats and gently buckled in for his return.
While we were waiting for the rest of the site to be secured, the Chaplain arrived to give Last Rites to him.
I overheard the Chaplains words of prayer asking for god to look over him from now on.
When all was finished we were given permission to return the nearly two miles to base. Upon our arrival it was my job to announce to the headquarters over the radio which element had returned and with the number of vehicles and soldiers. I announced my call sign, our nine men and three vehicles had returned.
I struggled to get my final sentence of " And one Distinguished American Soldier" out.
For the next 20 or so seconds the radio fell silent as if in a collective moment of silence and relief that he was back onto the camp.
We drove to the hospital and upon our arrival there were several leaders of the unit waiting for him.
We brought Milton out of the Humm-V and into the hospital, as we passed by the leaders, they presented him with a final salute.
Again, I am hoping that my words can provide a better view of that day than what you already know.
I had barely knew him for a year at that time and respected him as a soldier and admired him for training for and carrying out the mission he chose to do during our deployment.

Milton was a very good friend of mine. 3 years after graduating highschool, I lost contact with him and never could catch up with him. He's been on my mind for the last 4 years and I'm just now finding out today that my friend who I grew up with lost his life in the war in Iraq. He always was a fighter, he helped me fend off a neighborhood bully when we I first moved to South St. Louis, MO.in 1993. I'll be missing him forever and my condolences go out to his family. I always think of what it was like when we were coming up as kids, going to my grandmothers house, walking to school together, the holidays and when I used to babysit Sweet pea and his 2 brothers. These are the memories that I have that gets me through him not being here anymore. I am very proud of him and the beautiful family that he has left us. WE'LL NEVER SAY GOODBYE
I cannot see you with my eyes
Or hear you with my ears,
But thoughts of you are with me still
And often dry my tears.
I think of happy times we shared,
And then I softly sigh,
But this I know --
we'll meet again
And never say goodbye.

My Mother-in-law gave this to me when my son was killed. I look at it often and remember his sweet face, and let his memories flow through my mind. Sgt Milton A. Gist will live on forever in the memories and hearts of many. I have found that the hurt never goes away and the pain is as bad as the first day, BUT, life goes on and living each day does get easier. Keep your chin up and remember Milton's love is forever in your heart.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

Raheisha, Sherrita, CJ, Karmen, Andrew and family,

My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very sad time.

Raheisha, I just saw you in the KSN news coverage of the service. Had I known about the service this morning, I certainly would have been there. To have captured your heart, Milton must have been a wonderful man. I wish this sacrifice has not been asked of you and your children, but am grateful to Milton for his service.

Your neighbor on Collins Park,
Jolene

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

Please know that I know a little of how you feel now. Your soldier was doing what he cared about and knew how to do when his life was sacrificied. My son Benjamin C. Schuster was killed in Ramadi Iraq on February 25th, 2006. There are so many, and they all have someone who loved them best of all. Please know that we care and that we are with you as you live through the worst days of your life.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.
