Richard Toner

Colonel (Retired) Richard Dick Barcus Toner Colonel (Retired) Richard Dick Barcus Toner, 83, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away on 10 November 2013, of natural causes. Dick was married to Connie Platis on 1 September 1956; they were married for 57 years. He grew up in Wilmington, Delaware where he played football for, and joined the Navy after graduating from, Wilmington High School. After serving for five years as a sailor in the Navy, Dick received an athletic scholarship to Utah State University where he played football and was commissioned as a Regular Army Infantry Lieutenant after graduation in 1956. Dick served his Nation for 27 years including one tour of duty in both Korea and Ethiopia, and two tours in Vietnam. Among his numerous awards and decorations are the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal for Valor, Army Commendation medal for Valor, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, Silver Star and Bronze Star, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Ranger Tab, Parachutist Badge, and Vietnamese Ranger Badge. After retiring from the Army in 1978, he served as Vice President of Highway Oil Company in Topeka until he retired in 2002. He is survived by his wife, Connie, son John Toner and his wife Kristen, son Colonel Chris Toner and his wife Jenny, and three grandsons John, Zachery, and Joshua. A private family service with military honors will be held at the Desoto Baptist Church on Friday, 15 November.
