I had the privilege of meeting Jan in the late 80's at The Menninger Clinic. She didn't suffer fools, but never made me self conscious about my endless foolishness. I quote her often, and even hear my wife say, "There, there Nancy . . ." when we jointly recognize the parent who is trying to comfort a crying baby and is also in need of love.
We miss her lots.

I am so glad to have found this website to leave a message about our respected friend. My wife Susan and I loved her for her clear compassion for people, love of children, extraordinary knowledge of literature (she was the best read individual I have ever met) and warriorhood. I say that she embodied the best of courage, capacity to fight with love for the opponent (often misunderstood by her opponents), deep and abiding faith in the human condition and pure and pristine immersion in life. Susan and I have lost a friend. Psychiatry has lost a highly skilled clinician with a deep understanding of schizophrenia and the world has lost a real person.

I just learned yesterday of Jan's death and deeply regret that I will not be with those of you at her memorial. Jan and I hit it off immediately at a Family Therapy workshop in the seventies and treasured the times we could spend together. I so admired her brilliance, knowledge, vocabulary and positively wicked sense of humor. She once said, "I drink to make other people more interesting." What she taught me about Psychoeducation serves me everyday in my practice; I used to say that I would go out and buy any item or book she recommended to me.
Jan visited us twice here in California and I so enjoyed the lovely relationship she forged with my daughter as well. I will be with you in spirit on Saturday, Marianne Ault-Riche

It has been well noted what a loss Jan is to our clinical world. When I knew her in the 70's she was on the cutting edge of the low expressed emotion work for Schizophrenic clients. However, I remember her most fondly as a superb chef with a delightful sense of humor! I was helping her chop onions for an Indian meal one evening only to have her tease me re. my interpretation of the directive "chop into small pieces". The rest best left to your imagination! Jan would explain her numerous stacks of books about the home she shared with Dave by saying "Only a very dull woman would have an orderly house"! This talented and delightful woman will sorely be missed! Our condolences to all who loved her.

I was saddened to hear of Jan's death but good to learn it was peaceful. She was a delightful, humorous, intelligent and very special person to all who knew her. My sister and I had the privilege of sharing at one of her Menninger workshops in the '80s and having lunch with her afterwards.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Jan's passing. I loved working with her. I truly believe my son's love of reading came through Jan's love of reading. every-so-often, we would arrive home and there would be a lovely package from Rainy Day Books on our doorstep, a book for each boy. love those visits. My deepest sympathy to the family.
