Steven Paul Shilhanek was born July 23, 1952 in Marshalltown, the son of Leonard Francis and Shirley Elizabeth (Wilson) Shilhanek. He passed away on Friday, March 25 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 63 years, 8 months and 2 days.
Steve grew up in Tama and graduated from Tama High School in 1970. He then attended college and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1975. Steve took his first teaching job in 1975 with the Clarinda Community School District where he taught until his retirement. On May 23, 1986, he was united in marriage to Rebecca Louise Eike in Clarinda. With this union he gained three children, Michelle, Chris and Jennifer.
Over the years Steve was a proud member of the Clarinda Jay-Cee's and was very involved in The Muscular Dystrophy Association. He was an avid sports fan who loved bowling and the Iowa Hawkeyes. He enjoyed fantasy sport leagues, playing and taking stats for his slow pitch softball team, and recording stats for his grandson's baseball team. His true love was his family, especially his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Tom Shilhanek.
Survivors include his wife, Becky Shilhanek of Clarinda; his children, Michelle Kirchert and her husband Alan of Bethesda, Chris Shilhanek of Des Moines, Jennifer Bramble and her husband Tim of Clarinda; 10 grandchildren, Blake and her husband Luc, Devon, Lacy, Maddy, Reyna, JennaLee, McCartney, Lennon, Tyson and Harrison; one great grandchild, Drake; two brothers, Larry Shilhanek and his wife Ann of Strawberry Point, Mike Shilhanek and his wife Sandi of Garland, Texas; sisters and brothers-in-law, Rachel Eike of Clarinda, Larry Eike and his wife Becky of Amana, John Eike of Albuquerque, New Mexico; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in Clarinda. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery. Visitation with the family present took place on Monday evening, March 28 from 5-7 p.m. at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in Clarinda. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Fremont/Page County Relay For Life. Online remembrances or condolences can be shared at www.memoriesonline.com. The Walker-Merrick Funeral Home of Clarinda was in charge of arrangements.
