Archie Crawford

Yazoo City

Archie Pinkney Crawford, III, "Roots", Beloved brother and uncle, went to his eternal life June 30, 2017 at his residence on Fletcher Chapel Road, Yazoo City, Mississippi. He was born September 18, 1948 in Yazoo City to Archie and Lucille Crawford. He spent his young years in Eden, Mississippi. After graduating from Yazoo City High School in 1966, he attended Mississippi State University where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He also attended Holmes Junior College and graduated from Delta State University in business. He worked with his father at Crawford Farms in Eden for many years. He later worked for Marathon Oil Company and eventually retired from oilfield production. During this time, he moved and spent many years in Lafayette, La where he was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, then settling and retiring to his home on Fletcher Chapel Road where he lived next door to his adopted aunt and longtime friend Katherine Plunkett.

He is survived by his sister, Linda Crawford Harrison, Madison, MS, his sister and brother-in-law Dorothy and Bill Farmer of Lafayette, La, as well as many nieces and their families including Tara and Christopher Venetis with children Connor Crawford, his godson, and Cameron; Delle and Jason Smith with children Emma, Adelyn, and Jaxon; Emilee and Matthew Cooley with children Austin and Hudson; and Celena and Dustin Holmes with child Dylan Wyatt. Also his aunt Mary Beth Logan and his adopted aunt Katherine Plunckett.

He is preceded in death by his parents Archie Crawford Jr. and Lucille Cockrell Crawford of Eden, Ms. His grandparents, Archie Crawford, Sr. and Idell Nolan Crawford of Eden, Ms, and Earl and Ina Chapman of Jackson, Ms.

Archie definitely had a zest for life and his humor was unforgettable. His passion for Mississippi State Bulldogs will be remembered fondly as well as his love for all things NASCAR.

Uncle Archie, as he was affectionately called, was a loving, dedicated, and generous uncle to all his nieces, great nieces, and great nephews whom he treated as his own children and grandchildren. His love, wit, and tales of the past will be missed but never forgotten.

Visitation will be on Sunday, July 2, 2017 from 5-7 pm at Stricklin-King Funeral Home in Yazoo City, Ms. His funeral will be on Monday, July 3, 2017 at 11:00 am at Stricklin-King Funeral Home in Yazoo City, Ms

Archie was an amazing person. I was going through some old files and I found a letter where Mississippi State had charged Archie and me with shooting firecrackers in 1967. I had used Archie's car (Red Lizard), so in the end he was cleared. I remember him well from High Tower Dorm and the house at 513 Whitfield Street. He was so funny and engaging and a friend to everyone. Those were great times!

I think of Archie often and his constant happy smile. He always thought of others first. He loved his family, his friends, and Miss. State.

Archie "Goat" was my roommate at Miss State for awhile in our early college years. Nobody was more fun or giving than Archie. I spent many weekends in Eden with Blimp and Miss Lucille and always felt truly at home. As time passed we lost contact but I talk to my wife about Goat from time to time and all the fond memories. He was a groomsman in my wedding and showed up 3 days in advance with nothing but the clothes he had on. What a joy he was to all who knew and loved him. He showed up with a live goat in the back seat of his car at our apartment in Starkville and announced that he brought supper. We ate goat for 2 days. I will always remember him.
