Bert Fulmer Case, 76, of Brandon, passed from this life on Thursday, January 28, 2016, at the G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery V.A. Medical Center in Jackson.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00am, Monday, February 1, 2016, at St. Paul Catholic Church in Flowood, Mississippi.

Bert was born Monday, January 30, 1939, in Jackson, a son of the late J.W. Case and Eva Fulmer Case. He was a 1957 graduate of Murrah High School and graduate of the University of Mississippi, as well as a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

Bert's career as a news director, anchor, and reporter spanned more than fifty years, during which he covered every major news event in the state. During those years he served in many capacities for all three Jackson TV stations, WJTV, WLBT, and WAPT. His ability to deliver straight-forward news reports as well as personal and often humorous stories gained him a loyal following across the state of Mississippi and southeast. Bert especially enjoyed traveling the state to cover human interest features such as the Neshoba County Fair.

Many awards and honors were bestowed upon Bert including the 2001-2002 Silver M for Journalism from Ole Miss, the 2004 Associated Press Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame award, the 2006 Associated Press Broadcasters Association Howard Lett Newsperson of the Year, the 2004 Mississippi Distinguished Civilian Service Medal for coverage of Mississippi Army and National Guard events, and the 2014 Jackson Police Department Meritorious Service Award.

He loved flying with the Air National Guard and did stories all over the world with them as well as many other stories on our men and women in uniform. He also loved boating and camping and did nature-themed stories about the eagles and alligators at the Ross Barnett Reservoir. And most of all, he loved riding the train and doing stories from his train trips across the Rockies. And he never missed an opportunity to share his knowledge and career advice with aspiring young journalists.

Respected and esteemed by colleagues and his fellow Mississippians, Bert forever impacted our community and the news of our lives. Bert loved Mississippi and the people who live here. He will be missed by his family, those who love him, and many, many people throughout the state who can't remember a time when they didn't see him on their televisions each night.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Wieden Case, of Brandon; daughters, Valerie Case and Valinda Case Cochella, both of Torrance, California; granddaughter, Bellina Cochella, also of Torrance, California; and his beloved Jack Russell Terrier, Heidi.
