Charles Weems Obituary

Charles A. Weems

Canton

On June 22, 2017, Charles Alvin Weems, 66, in the words of his granddaughter, Leelee Stacey, "went to heaven to see Jesus." Charles was born in Canton in 1951. He graduated from Canton High School and Mississippi College, and he was a self-employed accountant for his entire professional life as owner of Weems Accounting. He was married for 43 years to the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Judy McDonald Weems, and they had three children whom he cherished. He served the City of Canton as an alderman for 36 years, and was currently serving as the Chairman of the CMU board in Canton. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Canton, where he had served as a deacon, and along with his wife, Judy, he served as director and co-director of the First Baptist Church's preschool for over 40 years. Throughout his life, he served on various committees for numerous organizations, including Canton Academy, the Canton Country Club, his church, and many others.

Charles was an active member of his community and church, and he was a smart, astute businessman, but his life cannot and should not be measured by his success in business or the titles he wore. Instead, Charles' life will be measured by the positive influence he had on so many, and by the tiny little ways he made people around him feel loved. He was generous to a fault. Charles gave selflessly to so many people in countless ways, and everyone who came in contact with him was better for it.

Charles loved his family, his friends, his hometown, and his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was an avid sports fan, no matter what kind or on what level, and he spent hours dissecting plays—from Canton Academy Panther football to Atlanta Braves baseball to whatever happened to be on tv at the time—with his best friend, Steve Stringer. He was so proud of his son-in-law, Scott Stacey's, accomplishments on the football field at Auburn, and he bragged on him often. For their entire lives, he was an encourager, supporter, advisor, and confidante to his children, Marsha, Leigh, and Anna. His love for his wife, Judy, was steadfast and apparent, as they worked together for over 30 years and were a team in every sense. But his greatest joy later in life were his two grandchildren, Mac (9) and Leelee (3.) To them, he was their Charles. Rarely did a day pass when he didn't come to see them, even if just for a few minutes, and throw the baseball with Mac or take him to do whatever Mac wanted to do. He was Mac's favorite person in the world, and Mac was Charles'.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernice Hayes and S.O. Weems.

He is survived by his wife, Judy McDonald Weems, his children Marsha Weems Stacey (Scott), of Canton, Leigh Weems of Brandon, and Anna Weems of Canton; two grandchildren: Mac and Leelee Stacey; four sisters: Marolyn Davison (Hal) of Meridian, Nancy Wilson (Hugh) of Sandhill, Becky Unland of Canton, Diane Ivy of Canton; one brother: Sammy Weems (Debbie) of Madison; many nieces and nephews who were so special to him, and too many friends to count.

Visitation for Charles will be at Breeland Funeral Home from Saturday, June 24, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 25, 2017. The funeral will be held at First Baptist Church of Canton at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 25, 2017.

Memorials should be made to the Lou McDonald Scholarship Fund at Canton Academy.

Judy, I am still in shock over this, Charles was the very first kid I think I every met. He was about 6 and I was about 5 years old. His Dad's service station was right beside our house. Coach Guest used to call me Charlie, he always thought I was Charles for some reason! Charles and I always laughed about that. It happened so much that Charles and I started calling each other "Brother" when we saw each other. From the 8th grade on Charles never once called me "Joe ", he always would say something like "hey brother how's it going" He was a very special friend And he always knew how to make everyone feel special. Everyone that knew him will miss him. We pray God will help you and your family through this.

For 17 years Charles has been my accountant and my precious friend. This is heartbreaking and unbelieveable. I just visited him in April. This is truly a loss for you his dear family, his business friends, his church family and the community. He was one of the kindest men I knew. You were blessed to have him as a husband and father. I was as well to have had his wisdom, guidance, love and generosity that was shown to me through all these years. I shall miss him so and shall be forever grateful to our Lord that mine and his paths crossed. May Christ's peace and love be with each one of you as we all are praying. Carole Ann Jones
