Gordon Smith Obituary
Gordon Lee Smith, 90, Retired Attorney, died Monday, January 7, 2008, at Indywood Glen in Greenwood. Services are Thursday, January 10, 2008, 2:00pm at Wilson and Knight Funeral Home with burial in Sidon Cemetery. Visitation is 12:00noon until the service at 2:00pm at Wilson & Knight Funeral Home. The Rev. R. H. Craig Gates and Rev. Matt Rowe will officiate the services.
Mr. Smith was born in Sidon on September 28, 1917, the son of the late Hattie Lee and Ocie Ola Smith. He attended school in Sidon and graduated from Greenwood High School in 1934. After graduation, he attended Sunflower Junior College in Moorhead two years where he was a member of the State Champion baseball team his sophomore year. He then entered the University of Mississippi where he attained an LLB Degree in law in August, 1939. While attending Ole Miss, he played on the baseball team as a pitcher and first baseman. He was a member of the Ole Miss Alumni Association and "M"Club.
He practiced law in Greenwood until his appointment as Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation where he served from 1941 to 1949. He returned to Greenwood where he practiced law and was an attorney with Billups Petroleum Company and coached Little League Baseball when it was first organized in Greenwood. He also served as State Senator from the 27'h District from 1956 - 1960 which at that time was composed of Leflore and Tallahatchie Counties. Following his Legislative Services, he was appointed General Counsel for the Mississippi Employment Security Commission. He later was appointed Regional Counsel for the Small Business Administration where he served 16 years until his retirement in 1979. He was a Communicant of the Church of Nativity, Greenwood.
After his retirement Mr. Smith had many hobbies he enjoyed including; golf, stamp collecting, bridge, gardening, and enjoying his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Ocie Brown Smith, Douglas Irving Smith; and his sister, Lillian Smith Dunn.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, the former Annie Lewis Myrick Smith, of Greenwood; daughter, Lillian Smith Myer and her husband, John of Friendswood, TX; son, Gordon Myrick Smith and his wife, Jana of Jackson, MS; and four grandchildren, John Wilson Myer and wife, Christina of Friendswood, TX, Claire Smith Belknap and husband, Charles of Jackson, MS, Catherine Myer Mader, and husband, Will of West Columbia, TX, and Natalie Rebekah Smith of Birmingham, AL.
