Herbert Scott Obituary

Herbert Andrew Scott, Sr.

April 22, 1924-September 11, 2017

Herbert Andrew Scott, Sr., was the seventh of eight children born to Will and Lucy Scott in Yazoo City, MS. He was preceded in death by his parents, his seventh siblings- Willie Bea, Lewis, Robert Earl, Lloyd, Lucille, William, and Mary Louise, his daughter, Juanita Scott Washington and his wife, Virginia Bland Scott.

Herbert began his formal education at Yazoo City Training School-Number Two, at the ripe age of four. He was among a group of six students from a graduating class of 49 to go to college. After graduation in 1941, Herbert attended Alcorn College where he excelled in academics and played football and basketball. During his sophomore year, as fate would have it, Herbert was called to the U.S. Army, thus an interruption in his college education, albeit not before having met "beneath the shade of giant trees," his life-time companion, Virginia Bland. Virginia was also a student who had come to Alcorn from Water Valley, Mississippi. Herbert and Virginia, did in fact, unite in matrimony during his leave of absence from the army. From this union, four children- Mary Carolyn, Juanita Lucille, Brenda Joyce and Herbert Scott, Jr. were born.

After his stint in the army, Herbert returned to Yazoo City where he remained to Yazoo City where he remained all of his life. He worked at various trades including: the oil industry at Southland Oil Refinery chemical plant; interior decorating, taxi driving, etc., all while resuming and continuing his education.

The turning point in Herbert's destined career path came through the opening of GI Schools where Herbert was a student of the late Mr. James Miller. Although he was the youngest in the class, Herbert was recommended and appointed to teach this class of GI's and this was the impetus needed to nudge him into the field of education, a career path naturally suited for him. Herbert earned Bachelors and Masters degrees at Jackson State College in the field(s) of education and administration, respectively. He also pursued post graduate studies at Mississippi College.

Herbert began teaching in a three-room, wooden-floored school (Colby School) and from there was named principal of the newly erected Campbellsille School in 1958, where he served until 1972. Herbert became Federal Programs Director of Yazoo County Schools and was an integral part of the Central Staff often acting as Superintendent. He retired from education in 1987. Following his retirement, he devoted full attention to his "second" career, that of housing development of federally funded multi-family housing programs and housing target to benefit seniors and persons with disabilities.

Herbert A. Scott, Sr. established a reputation as a community leader and wore many hats. His church and other civic work is well known in Yazoo City and beyond. He is a lifetime member of Beulah Land Baptist Church where he served as head deacon, choir director, Sunday school teacher, Superintendent, and Chairman of the church steering committee.

God blessed Herbert Andrew Scott, Sr. with a rich and rewarding life and many can attest that he extended a helping hand along the way. He left a lifelong legacy that will be remembered for years to come.

Herbert Scott, Sr. leaves to mourn his passing his children, Mary Scott Knoll, Brenda Scott Smith, and Herbert Scott, Jr., his daughter-in-law, Mary Lena Scott, one granddaughter, Jasmine Lowe (Jonathan), his grandsons, Jeffrey Scott Knoll, Joffre Washington, Jason Knoll, Jaimar Scott, Jairon Paul Scott, one nephew, Ronald H. Johnson, one great-granddaughter, Adalyn Joy Lowe and other relatives and friends.

Services will be held, Friday, September 22, 2017 at 11:00 a. m. at the L.T. Miller Center, in Yazoo City, MS. Those services are entrusted to Century Funeral Home located at 727 Webster Avenue, Yazoo City, Mississippi.
