Hugh Montgomery Obituary

Hugh Cameron Montgomery, Jr.

Madison - Hugh Cameron Montgomery, Jr. of Madison passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at the age of 92.

A native of Madison, born December 28, 1925, he was the son of the late Mattie Scott Montgomery and the late Hugh C. Montgomery, Sr. He worked with his dad at the general store in Madison until he graduated from Madison-Ridgeland Consolidated High school in 1943. From there, he traveled to Baton Rouge, LA where his sister, Mary Lena Field, lived and enrolled at Louisiana State University. His college experience was cut short when he enlisted in the United States Army in August 1943, thus beginning a life-changing journey that took him across the battlefields of Western Europe.

Hugh was a member of the I&R Platoon, Headquarters Co, 385th Inf. Regiment, 76th Infantry Division, US THIRD ARMY. His unit participated in the Battle of the Bulge, the river assault across the Sauer into Germany and ultimately ended the war in Hohenstein, Germany. He was awarded the Bronze Star with V for Valor as well as the Combat Infantryman Badge and several other medals commemorating his service during the war.

Upon returning home he completed his BS in Business Administration from LSU, where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity, and went to work for the Internal Revenue Service for 17 years. He also served as a guest lecturer in accounting at the University of Mississippi. Always seeking to improve himself, Hugh enrolled in night classes at the Jackson School of Law and received his JD in 1962. He practiced law with Dossett, Magruder, & Montgomery, which ultimately merged with Butler Snow in 1988, until his retirement at age 75 in 2000. Hugh specialized in tax law, was generally recognized as top in his field and was held in high regard for his integrity and commitment. He successfully argued before the Supreme Court of Mississippi, received recognition and held many positions during his career including Mississippi Bar (Chairman, Taxation Committee, 1977-1978); American Bar Association (Chair, 1989-1991, Regional Liaison Meetings Committee); American College of Tax Counsel (Member, Board of Regents, 1994); Mississippi Tax Institute - Chairman, Board of Trustees, 1984; Department of Justice, Tax Division, 1982-1984, Member, Advisory Committee on Tax Litigation; and Best Lawyers in America (1991, 1992).

Hugh loved the Lord God more than anything and centered that faith with his church family at Christ United Methodist Church in Jackson, the Monday-night sharing group, and Tuesday-morning bible study. Hugh's greatest joys were spending time with his family and friends. Following closely behind, and at times exceeding, was his love of quail and duck hunting. In earlier days, he loved traveling, growing prize-winning roses, playing tennis, and jogging. Hugh was active in the community, a past-president of the local Kiwanis Club, and enjoyed the Walter Scott Coffee Club until the time of his passing.

He is preceded in death by his beloved granddaughter, Jessica Lee Brantley. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Faye H. Montgomery, of Madison; daughter, Cameron Montgomery Parker and her husband, Steve, of Dallas; son, Hugh C. "Monty" Montgomery, III and his wife, Susan, and Susan's sons: Ryan Christopher Shiflet and Russell Benjamin Shiflet, of Ft. Worth; stepson, Robert C. Brantley, of Madison; cousins, Frank H. Montgomery, Jr., of Madison and Robert L. Field, of LaGrange, TX; great-niece, Joy Staton Myers; god-children: Mary Alice Primos Blackmon, Mary Louise Bomboy Polk, and Will S. Bomboy; and long-time family friends and helpers, Catherine McLaurin and Becky Roan.

Friends are invited to visitation with the family from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at Christ United Methodist Church, 6000 Old Canton Road, where the Funeral Service will begin at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 in the Sanctuary, Bishop Clay F. Lee, Jr. and Reverend Calvin Cosnahan officiating. There will be a one-hour visitation immediately preceding the service. Interment will follow in Montgomery Cemetery in Madison.

Pallbearers will be Dr. David W. Bomboy, Arthur W. "Art" Doty, Grant Stephen Hughes, Jimmy McKay, J. Chadwick "Chad" Mask, Frank H. Montgomery, Jr., James S. Overstreet, and Philip R. Webster.

Honorary pallbearers will be Charles L. Brocato, Robert L. Field, C.W. "Billy" Walker, Dr. Kirby Walker, Gus Primos, Kenneth Primos, Max E. McDaniel, Auburn C. Lambeth, and William "Bill" Steele.

Memorials may be made to Christ United Methodist Church of Jackson, Madison United Methodist Church (Montgomery Cemetery Fund), the Salvation Army, or your favorite charity.

The family would like to acknowledge the wonderful care and support provided by Daphne Blackmon, LaTonya Bouldin, Jackie Smith, and Cassandra Lowe, to Hugh and our entire family - true angels.
