Funeral services for former Smith County Chancery Clerk, Hushel "Lamar" Moss, age 87 of Raleigh, were held Monday, April 1, 2013.
Born in Raleigh, Mississippi, on January 18, 1926, to Joseph Hushel Moss and Clara Mayo Moss, he attended Milan High School in Tennessee and graduated from Raleigh High School, Mississippi State University and Jackson School of Law. He served in the United States Navy, Atlantic Fleet during World War II.
A lifelong cattle and timber farmer, Moss began his public service career in 1956 as a member of the Mississippi State Senate representing Smith and Rankin Counties. He served on the State Building Commission from 1958 to 1960. He served seven terms as Chancery Clerk of Smith County from 1964 to 1992 and was a two-time president of the Mississippi Chancery Clerks Association. He was a member of many positions of state and local government, including the East Central Planning & Development District, American Legion, and Raleigh Area Chamber of Commerce. A devoted "Bulldog", Moss was a member of the Mississippi State University Alumni Association, Patron of Excellence.
As a faithful and lifelong member of Raleigh United Methodist Church, he was a delegate to the Mississippi Annual Conference and an adult Sunday school teacher for many years.
He is survived by his sister, Mary Alice Moss Clark of Jackson; four children; eight grandchildren and one great-grandson; his namesake, Cooper Hushel Moss. His children and grandchildren include: Son, Joseph L. Moss of Raleigh and his wife, Robin and their two children, Kayla and Brenton Moss; Son, Jeffery H. Moss and his wife, Jeanine, of Houston, Texas and their three children, Jessica Kubacak, Lucas Moss, and Abbey Moss; Daughter Vicki May of Tuscaloosa, Alabama and her daughter, Mary Caroline; Son, Jon Grady Moss and his wife, Stephanie, of Broomfield, Colorado and his two daughters, Mollie and Callie.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife of 54 years, Bobbye James Moss.
Blessed with a spirit of humble intelligence and devotion, Lamar will be remembered for his integrity and unfailing dedication to God, Country, Community, and family.
The family welcomes memorials to Raleigh United Methodist Church or to the donor's favorite charity.
