James Griffin Obituary

Brooks Griffin, M.D.

Ridgeland

On Saturday, June 22, James Brooks Griffin, M.D. went to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Brooks was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, friend, and compassionate physician to countless people throughout his life. He will truly be missed. He touched many lives.

Brooks was the son of Dr. James Curtis Griffin, Jr. and the late Elizabeth Eckles Griffin. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and enjoyed a happy childhood growing up in Jackson, Mississippi. He graduated from Murrah High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Mississippi College. He completed Medical School at the University of Mississippi Medical School and a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He served as Chief of Staff at River Oaks Hospital and was a long-time Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology as well as numerous other medical societies. Brooks made his life's work bringing life into the world. As a respected and loving physician, he delivered thousands of babies over three generations of families. He brought joy to the lives of many families and truly loved each and every one of his patients.

Brooks was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Jackson and had recently joined the congregation of First Baptist Church of Madison. Through the years, Brooks served the Church in various capacities, including Sunday School teacher, Cub Scout Master, and on the foreign mission field in Africa. He loved serving the Lord, and he enjoyed sharing his faith with everyone!

Brooks was an avid outdoorsman and hunter. He hunted everything! He loved fellowship with friends and family at his Farm. He had some of his happiest moments at his Farm whether it was planting food plots with his tractor, entertaining friends, or blowing up beaver dams. He participated in the Boy Scouts of America for over 40 years. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and served as a scout leader for many years. He served on the board of the Andrew Jackson Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He was awarded the prestigious Silver Beaver Award in recognition of his exceptional character and distinguished service to scouting. Brooks was a lifetime sponsor of Ducks Unlimited and supported the National Wild Turkey Federation. He was a supporter of the Wounded Warrior Foundation and all of our men and women in uniform.

He is survived by his best friend, his loving wife of 38 years, Cathy Griffin, of Ridgeland. He was a devoted father and father-in-law to Jayne Moorman and her husband, Andy, of Greenville, SC; Lacey Fondren and her husband, George, of Ridgeland, MS; James Griffin and his wife, Evgeniya, of Plano, TX; and John Griffin and his wife, Hannah, of College Station, TX. Brooks was the doting "Big Daddy" to his four grandchildren, Burke, Brooks, Johnny, and Ann. His favorite pastime was "spoiling them rotten"!

He is also survived by his father, Dr. James Curtis Griffin, Jr.; three siblings Bill Griffin of Jackson, Dr. Betty Griffin of Wilmington, NC, and Carol Carnell of Memphis, TN; and an aunt, Mary Jane Henley of Jackson.

To honor Brooks' memory and celebrate his life, the family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 26, 4:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home, Highland Colony Parkway, Ridgeland, MS. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 27, at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Madison, MS. Visitation will also be held at 10:00 a.m. before the service at First Baptist Church, Madison.

Memorials in honor of Brooks may be made to the Andrew Jackson Council of Boy Scouts of America; French Camp Academy, French Camp, MS; or First Baptist Church of Madison, MS Building Fund.

I did not know until today's receipt of a letter about Dr. Griffin's death. I saw him for a check up literally a few days before his passing last June. What I really liked about him was his unusually calm spirit. Rest in Peace, Man of God.

I just now found out about Dr. Griffin's death when at my primary physician's office. I was shocked and saddened to hear the news. I had been a patient of Dr. Griffin's for over 30 years-he delivered both of my children and at every visit he asked about their well-being. I still have the Christmas ornaments made by his wife. I feel as though I have lost a friend. My heartfelt condolences to his family who he spoke of with much love and pride.

This truly breaks my heart! Dr. Griffin was the best all around! I drove faithly for over 5 years, 2 1/2 hours for each visit until his passing. In tears now just thinking about him! I've never had a doctor to actually sit and discuss his findings or show the amount of concern that he has shown. He listened to his patients with care! Patient care was definitely top priority! I will always love you Dr. G!

I am sorry it has taken me so long to write this but I have been in shock. I was Dr. Griffin's 447th patient which I am very proud of. I started using Dr. Griffin in 1989 when I lived in Mt. Olive/Magee MS for 11 years and then moved to Hattiesburg, MS in 2000 and continued using Dr. Griffin, in 2010 I moved to Picayune, MS and still continued to use Dr. Griffin. My heart broke the day I found out he had passed away. I did not believe it. I called his office number on Sunday and the after hours person answered and I asked if the information that I had heard on Dr. Griffin was true and the person could not tell me or maybe did not know. I left a message with him to have Dr. Griffin's office call me first thing Monday morning and sad to find out that the information of his passing was true. I was so sad for so long...could not believe it was true. He was such a caring, compassionate and you could tell a great family man to his wife and children. He would always tell me to send him an updated picture of my only son Jarrod who is now 17 and I always forgot to do that. I am so honored for him to have been the one to deliver my son. I also had a miscarriage in 1999 which he was very supportive during the whole ordeal. He was so very personable and patient. I am so very sorry to his wife, family and grandchildren for your loss. His staff there at his clinic were also amazing and I know that they miss him dearly along with all of his patients. I miss you Dr. Griffin but God above gained an amazing angel.

I just found out about this loss for us. I am shocked as I was in his office as a patient shortly before his death. He had been my physician for over twenty years and delivered my 17 year old son. He was always a gentleman, a witness, and genuinely concerned about his patients. He was the only doctor that would take me to his office just to "chat" after every visit. That demonstrated he loved people more than numbers!
God bless his family during this loss. I can only imagine the loss of such a strong presence.

Sincerely grieved,

I was so sad to hear about Dr. Griffin's death. He was the best doctor. A friend who was also a patient informed me of his death after she tried to make an appointment at his clinic. He delivered my only son and made me feel at ease during my pregnancy after I had an earlier miscarriage. I will never forget the most wonderful care he gave me as I had three different surgeries. I will never find another doctor like him. He will be missed by many people. May God bless his family as they struggle with this terrible loss.

After working with him in the hospital, watching him make rounds, and filling in at his office on occasion, I can say he truly filled the role of 'physician and healer'. He will be missed, but I'm glad he's with his creator now, the other 'best place one could ever be'. He served his life well on this earth. Prayers and blessings to his family.

Dr Griffin became my Dr while my husband was in seminary at RTS. Even after moving an hour away and then two hours away we still kept him as my dr and he delivered my first 4 children. I was in Jackson recently and thought of him as I drove down Lakeland. I always appreciated his care and his ability to calm anxious mamas. I remember him telling me that I could call him any time day or night and that if he was worried about being awaken at night, he 'd have found another profession. He was kind, generous, compassionate, and calming. So grateful for his role in my family.

July 19, 2013

I saw Dr. Griffin for my very first gynecological appointment in the early 1980's. He had joined the practice of Dr. Sutherland, who was retiring, and who had been my mother's physician for many years and, in fact, delivered me. Dr. Griffin was so kind, patient and understanding with a nervous young girl who had only seen a pediatrician in the past. I saw him for several years thereafter before briefly moving away from Jackson. He was a blessing to his patients and will, no doubt, be greatly missed.

There are so many words that I could say about my Dr. G but none can come close to how amazing of a doctor, friend, comforter and person he was. He always went beyond his call to make sure that I, along with his other patients, had everything needed. He loved his "babies" and proudly displayed them throughout his office, he would even fuss if you didn't bring in updated pictures, lol! His family will continue to be in my prayers as well as his co-workers who I've also came to love as family throughout the years. He will always be one of my role models and I will forever cherish his many words of advice and "sit down, lets figure it out" sessions.

June 28, 2013

I was in complete shock when I learned of Dr.Griffin's passing. He was a truly great man! God put him on this earth to do the job he had done for 30+ years! He knew his calling. I had been a patient of his since I was in college. He was always so caring and compassionate. He remembered everything about me each time I saw him. When I got married I was going out of the country on my honeymoon and he pulled a card out of his wallet for a medical airplane and had his nurse make me a copy of it to use if one of us got sick. He assured me everything would be ok and that I would get pregnant when I was having trouble. He delivered my first daughter and she was perfect. He let me cry on his shoulder and reassured me everything would be ok when I miscarried my second baby. My fondest memory is his comment in January 2012 when he told me I was having 2 babies....he said "this is great!! It is our first set of twins for the year!! You are going to be fine!!" All this was said as I was crying. Little did I know what a great blessing my girls and Dr. Griffin were to me. He will be truly missed and there will never be a replacement for him. I am praying daily for his family!!

I was one of Dr. Griffin's first patients that he saw all the way through their first pregnancy. I started going to him in 1982 and have been with him ever since. He saw me through all four of my children. The last one was 20 years later than the first 3 and he said "God does have a sense of humor doesn't he?" We laughed about that for awhile. My youngest is named Griffin. He always asked about my family every time I saw him and told me about his. He loved his family very much. He was a very special man. He always put his patients first. I will truly miss him. There will never be another Dr. Griffin. My sympathies go out to his family during this difficult time. I know he is watching over all of us and is in a much better place. We love you Dr. Griffin.

June 28, 2013

I remember the first time I met Dr. Griffin, when my mom was in the hospital decades ago and he was making rounds for another doctor. We were so impressed with him, especially of his love for the Lord. From that chance meeting, I saw me through two pregnancies, the first of which he was on vacation when she decided to come! But he was there when my son was born. Dr. Giffin is one of those individuals who leaves a lasting impression on you - in a very good way. He ran the race to the end and has received his reward. He ran it well. I am so sorry that he is no longer here but I know he is have a great time with the Lord and all the saints who have gone before him. My prayers are lifted up for the family.

Anyone that has ever met Dr. Griffin has been in the presence of a great man. He was a wonderful doctor, a very compassionate person, and a sincere family man. It warms my heart to see so many posts about him mentioning his family to his patients. What a great testimony! His love for them overflowed. As a patient of his for nearly 20 years I myself have heard stories of his family and in true character, he always asked about my family as well. He delivered both my girls, performed some minor surgeries, and yet he never made me feel that it was his "job". He was one of a kind. I'm sure his family knows this. I hope it helps for them to know that so many of us knew how great he was too. Keeping you all in my prayers.

I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Griffin. He has been my doctor of over 30 years and I feel as though we had grown up and raised our children together. Not only would he discuss the objective of the days visit but we always discussed what was going on in both of our lives, that is what made him SO special. He told me of the weddings, grandchildren, and so many special moments in his life with his family, he loved you all so much. He truly was a very special man and doctor and I feel I will never be able to replace him. I feel blessed to have known such a fine man who is now in the arms of God. To the Family of Dr. Brooks Griffin:
I worked with him in Labor and Delivery at the University MS Medical Center in the early 80s. To this day, I still think about the miracles that happened with some of his patients. I remember being an LPN on his "stat" deliveries and the babies survived because of his perceptions and bedside manners (and God). I was always in awe of him because he really loved his patients. Please know that my prayers are with you for God to give you the peace that you need during your time of bereavement. May Dr. Griffin rest in peace...

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Dr. Griffin. He was my OB/GYN for a few years and helped bring my two children into the world. I had hoped he would bring my other future children as well. Dr. Griffin was kind, gentle, caring, and generous. When I went in to have my first child, he reassured me that everything would be fine and he talked to me through it all. He treated me like I was his own, not just another patient. He was a great doctor and he was passionate about his job and that's what made him even better. He was a wonderful person in general.I loved that man dearly. No one can ever take his place. Dr. Griffin will be greatly missed and forever loved. Prayers go up to the close friends and family of Dr.Griffin. Heaven has gained yet another beautiful angel.

Words that describe Dr. Griffin are: The "BEST". He was my Doctor for many years, and he was always the same no matter where you saw him. He was such a sweet and compassionate person. He loved his patients and was never too busy to talk with them. I'm praying for the family as they face this lonely void in their lives. God is in control, and HE sustains us in every situation that we face in life.
Dr Griffin will be greatly missed:

Dr. Griffin will always hold a special place in the hearts of our family. We are so sorry for your loss. There was not a time that I saw Dr. Griffin that he did not talk about his family and there were always pictures and stories to be shared. He was a wonderful doctor and a wonderful Christian man. He will be missed! Your family and the dear staff at his office will remain in my prayers. May God comfort you all in your time of sorrow.

Dr. Griffin was my GYN for years, and brought me through many difficult surgeries and illnesses. He also brought two of the greatest blessings into the world for the Flynn family: Tyler Flynn and Ava Hamlin. He was a skilled physician, a good friend, and a wonderful, kind man. He will never be forgotten.

I will always remember Dr. Griffin as the kindest and most compassionate doctor I have ever known. He delivered my son and took care of me for 25 years. Every morning I take my calcium and it's ONLY because I hear him say, " Neetsie, you've got to do it!" I will miss him! God bless his family with your loving Grace.

Dr. Griffin will truly be missed. He was the most caring doctor I had ever met. I was with him for 20+ years and he treated me like part of his family. You don't find that very often. He had a love for his patients, as well as his family. I'm going to miss sitting in that office telling him all my problems and him sitting there with open ears, as well as him sharing stories about his family. I believe he touched the lives of everyone he came in contact with. My prayers are with his family.

Dr. Griffin delivered my two beautiful children. We met over 18 years ago and I will never forget him or his sweet family. He was good to me, but also good to my family taking them hunting and creating memories. Thank you for sharing your life and your faith with us! He is God's biggest angel now!

I met Dr. Griffin in Lexington @ Holmes County Hospital. He became my Doctor in 1980, delivered my daughter Jamie in 1988, my granddaughter Hailey in 2011, both deliveries were very complicated. Dr. Griffin was family to the Harts.

This world was so very blessed to have had this gentle giant of a man here to serve our needs! God gave us such a precious gift in Brooks Griffin!! I have never seen such compassion and true concern from any other physician. He truly cared about his patients! When we lost our second child Brooks cried as much as we did. It was about the same time as you, Cathy had lost a child as well and Brooks was just devastated!! He had to do some exploratory surgery at the time and we asked him to do a tubal at the time and he was just adamant that we NOT, he kept saying, "but Collie, WE can get pregnant again!!" He finally consented! and did the tubal! He was soooo precious during that very difficult time. He treated our daughter at the very young age of 12, at the time he told us she was his youngest patient ever... he was so very gentle and caring with her! He also delivered our four granddaughters!!! Well... three of the four! He didn't make it up the stairs for #2.... :) She got in a bit of a hurry!!!
May God comfort each of you during this time. Please know that you are in our prayes... know that this world will never be the same without the wonderful man!! God Bless !!
