John L Bomar
Grenada
On June 27, 2015, John L Bomar, age 72, was received into the loving arms of our God leaving the pain and suffering of the past 3 years behind.
John L was born and grew up in Piggott, Arkansas. After graduating from Piggott High School, he spent four years in the Air Force before joining Union Planters Bank as a computer operator. He attended IBM and other technical schools, and in 5 years was made manager of satellite operations and a bank officer. One of the satellite operations was GrenUp Computer Corporation which brought him to Grenada, MS regularly. When Sunburst Bank was ready to develop a computer department in 1972, John L moved from Memphis and Union Planters to Grenada and the Sunburst Banking System, where he remained for over 24 years, leaving as Executive Vice-president of Operations. His last working years, he was a Grenada Public Schools employee, where he joyfully maintained all athletic fields.
John L was involved whenever and wherever his children were-- such as building playground equipment, floats, youth league sports and doing Hee-Haw skits at Kirk Academy. At Grenada Public he was a band and athletic booster. He chaperoned science fair trips, and provided sound equipment for Visions. He could be found building Student Council floats, cooking at the concession stands, and enjoying GHS football tailgating. He also served as PTA president at Lizzie Horn and on the Grenada Public School Board from 1983-1988.
John L was an avid outdoorsman and a member of Double Cypress Hunting Club and Pine Lake Lodge. Health permitting, he enjoyed deer and duck hunting, fishing, and wood-working in his shop. He was able to enjoy playing cards with family and attending his grandchildren's ball games and performances until his last days.
John L was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he served on the administrative board.
John L was preceded in death by his parents, Jewell and Tom Bomar; and a sister, Bobbie Sue Bomar. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Nancy McQuery Bomar; and 3 children, Carolyn Bakke (Paul), Alicia Davis (Stan), and Richard Bomar (Shannon); a sister, Joann Duty (Ray); a niece, Tracy Ballard (Joe); and their son, Matthew; and numerous cousins and friends. He felt blessed by and was so proud of his 4 grandchildren, Lauren and John Bakke, and JT and Sarah Bomar.
Memorials may be sent to the Lynne McKnight Gregory Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 160, Blue Mountain College, Blue Mountain, MS 38610.
