John Nolen Canon Sr.

John Canon Obituary

Services for John Nolen Canon, Sr. of Tunica were held Saturday, July 11, 2009, at the Tunica Presbyterian Church, with burial in Oakwood Cemetery. Rev. Paul Husband officiated at the services.
Mr. Canon, a farmer who pioneered crops such as peanuts and rice in Tunica County, died Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at his home in Tunica. He was born April 23, 1923 in Tunica and educated in local schools and at Southwestern in Memphis (now Rhodes College).
Mr. Canon was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Tunica and a former member of Tunica Presbyterian Church, where he served as choir director for 15 years. He loved sailing and music was an accomplished clarinetist, forming his own band and playing throughout the region. He served in the U.S. Army and as a chairman of the local Republican Party and was elected to the Mississippi Legislature, from 1956-1960.
Mr. Canon was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Becky Canon; two brothers, Robert Henry Canon and Charles William Canon; and a sister, Sue Canon Lewis.
He is survived by his children, Bettie (Lonnie) Shannon, Nolen (Toni) Canon and Laura Canon, all of Tunica; one brother, Rev. Cham Canon of Memphis, TN; three grandchildren, Daniel (Nicole) Shannon, Marti Green (Paul Michael) and Rebecca (Martin) Allison; and four great-grandchildren, Paul Michael and John Daniel Green, Samuel Allison and Nolen Thomas Shannon.
The family requests that memorials be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

I enjoyed playing lots of jazz music with John. He was very good at improvising, a delightful fellow with which to play jazz. I especially remember a jazz gig trip we took together to Connecticut with Sam Gore and Bert Hill. Oh, yes, and the Oxford gigs.
