John Powell Obituary

John William Powell 82, of Liberty, MS, passed away at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center in McComb on Monday November 15, 2010.
Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 pm until 8:30 pm at Liberty Baptist Church in Liberty, MS, with visitation again on Friday from 9:30am until service at 11 a.m. at the church. Dr. David Bishop, Rev. James Sadler and Rev. Rusty Silvertooth will officiate. Burial will be in Amite River Cemetery in Liberty. Jones Family Funeral Services are in charge of arrangements.
Mr Powell was born March 4, 1928 in Amite County, MS. He was son of John Wesley and Nan Bond Powell. He was elected to the senate in 1960 and retired in 1988. He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents; infant twin sisters; and a sister, Carolyn Powell.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Ann Wells Powell; one son, John Wesley Powell; also the V. Watts family of Livingston, La.; his devoted caretakers, Nolan Hardy, Aldrich and Sherry Watts, Charlie and Mildred Taplin, Patsy Robinson and Patricia Tobias; and the employees of Liberty Community Center and Hospice Ministries.
Pallbearers will be Phillip Watts, Ryland Watts, John Milton Bond, Harry Wells, Mike Powell and Rev. Michael Adams. Honorary pallbearers will be Kenneth Gordon, Sidney Boteler, Earl Alford, Lester Lambert, Bob O'Neal, Dr. Chuck Kelly, Les Lambert, Tom Bulger, Jimmy Gordon, Randy Braswell and Clifton Terrell.
In lieu of flowers the family request memorials to Hospice Ministries or Liberty Baptist Church.

Senator Powell was a man of honor. His word was enough to know whatever someone was told by him was what would happen. I have met very few men that people respected as much as Mr. Powell. I am sure the Lord has welcomed home a devoted servant with a "Well Done". Our sympathy to his family.
