Robert Shumpert Obituary

Robert Fletcher Shumpert, 56, passed away at his home on June 21, 2007 after a long illness. Memorial services will be held on Sunday, June 24, 2007 at 2 p.m. at St. Pierre's Episcopal Church in Gautier with the Reverend Hunter Isaacs officiating.
Robert was born in Amory to O.F. (Shine) and Mary Shumpert and was a graduate of Amory High School and Mississippi State University. He worked with the Community Counseling Service in Starkville and moved to Gautier in 1989 where he later served as Director of Singing River Industries. His work, assisting people with disabilities to live, work, and play in their own community, was a significant and meaningful part of his vocation.
Robert also enjoyed serving as personal financial consultant to his family and friends, sharing his expertise and gentle advice to the novice investor. He left his work in the mental health field in 1997 to become caregiver to his wife's parents, Rosalie and Exo Bassi for whom he lovingly cared until their deaths.
Robert will be remembered as a gentle, witty and loving family man. The Shumperts' fun-loving nature and acceptance of all people made their home on King's Bayou a special gathering place for friends and family. In the final week of his life, their home was filled with love and music as "Shump" was surrounded by his immediate family and close friends including cousin and caregiver Tim Santucci of Pensacola, FL and cousins Dorothy Simmons of Amory, Margaret Love and Ellen, Mary Ellen and Ann Bush of Macon, GA.
Robert is survived by his devoted wife, Norciva Rosalie Bassi Shumpert, and son, Nathan Exo Geddie of New York City, NY.
Donations to St. Pierre's Episcopal Church, 4412 Gautier-Vancleave Road, would be appreciated for those wishing to make a memorial contribution.
The Ocean Springs Chapel of Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

I arose early, and made a brew.I walked to the french windows my eyes slowly adjusting themselves. Robert was rocking in his chair, silhouetted in that pale powdery grey light of a Southern dawn. His right leg across, his ankle resting on his left knee, cup held on his right hip as steam rose from it.I stepped on the deck breaking his deep reverie only to be greeted with a smile and a soft "good morning" drawled in his chest. We sat and chatted, laughed, drank copious brews and "smoked" till the sun quit stalking the east and climbed over the tree line to burn the mist off the swamp as it had done for thousands of years. Flocks of white birds clattered their way upwards in the still air as two grown men "fooled"their time away together.

When I opened R kid's email informing me of Roberts passing, I knew then there was more than the "social glue" of alcohol, music and laughter that had kept us all together, for so long.

That morning in Mississippi, I knew we had reached what most people never find in this world

We had it"sorted".

That was to be the last time I saw him alive....

When I came to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me,
I want no rites in a gloom filled room,
Why cry for a soul set free.
Miss me a little -- but not too long,
And not with your head bowed low.
Remember the love that we once shared,
Miss me -- but let me go.
For this is a journey that we all must take,
And each must go alone.
It's all a part of the Master's plan,
A step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick of heart,
Go to the friends we know.
And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds,
Miss me -- but let me go.

My love to you. You and Nath are in my prayers.
