Robert Sugg Obituary

Judge Robert Perkins Sugg, 93, died Friday, January 1, 2010. He was born in Eupora, Mississippi on February 21, 1916 to the late Amos Watson Sugg and Virgie Cooper Sugg.
A graduate of Eupora High School, he attended Wood Junior College, Mississippi State, and Jackson School of Law. He passed the bar in February of 1940 and returned to Eupora where he established a private law practice.
On June 23, 1940 he married Elizabeth Lorraine Carroll, also of Eupora. They had four sons, Robert Perkins Sugg, Jr., Charles William Sugg, John David Sugg, and an infant son who died in childbirth and was not named.
Judge Sugg served as an attorney in Eupora from 1940-1950. He was elected Chancery Court Judge in 1951 for the fourteenth district of Mississippi. He served there until 1970, when he was appointed to fill an unexpired term on the Mississippi Supreme Court. He served there until he retired from the bench in 1983. Following his retirement, he was appointed Senior Status and in that role continued to serve as a trial judge until 1995. He visited several venues in the State to try cases.
He was an active member of the Mississippi and American Bar Association; as well as the American Legion and held various offices in that organization.
He is listed in Who's Who in the South and Southwest (1950) and Who's Who in America.
He was active in First Baptist Church in Eupora until moving to Jackson where he became active in First Baptist Church Jackson. In both churches he served as Sunday school teacher, deacon, and on numerous committees. He especially enjoyed teaching English as a Second Language through the Friend-to-Friend Ministry to Internationals at FBCJ. He also served as an English tutor for students in reading at various Junior High schools in Jackson. He and his wife, Rene Sugg, taught ESL workshops through the Mississippi Baptist Convention and the North American Mission Board.
Judge Sugg was an avid outdoorsman, seldom passing up an opportunity for hunting and fishing. He also had a great love for flying and obtained his private pilot's license. He then flew to court as often as possible. After his move to Jackson, he was an active member of the Civil Air Patrol and always enjoyed any time he spent at the wheel of his Cessna 172.
He was preceded in death by his siblings, Joe Fox Sugg of Eupora, Elizabeth Sugg Furr of Columbus, William Ralph Sugg of West Point, and Amos Watson Sugg, Jr. of Eupora.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Lorraine Carroll Sugg, three sons: Robert Perkins Sugg, Jr. of Jackson, Mississippi; Charles William Sugg and John David Sugg, both of Atlanta, Georgia; five grandchildren: Harriet Sugg Lehnhoff of Orlando FL, Robert Perkins Sugg III of Wartrace, Tennessee, Carroll Gregory Sugg Speed of Columbus, Mississippi, John David Sugg Jr. and Ashley Sugg of Austin, Texas; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be this afternoon at Wright and Ferguson on High St. from 3:00 to 5:00pm. Interment will be Monday, January 4, 2010 at the City Cemetery in Eupora, Mississippi at 10:00am; followed by a celebration service at First Baptist Church, Jackson, Mississippi at 3:00pm.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering.

What a remarkable man and what a legacy. He impacted so many people that I love, and they treasured him, so I treasure him and his life, though I only met him briefly once. My thoughts are with all you who loved The Judge. I know he is enjoying every moment from here on, and I am thankful for what he meant and means to my family.

Dear Rene and family:

June and I read with sorrow that Judge had passed away. The world lost a great Christian man. He was full of love, humility and uprightness and such an inspiration to others. We have missed seeing you since our move to S. C. nearly 4 years ago. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and we know that we will see all of you in the Promised Land when we are all gathered up.

In His love, Major and June McDaniel

How privileged I was to call the Judge, and am still privileged, and Rene my friend/s. God was smiling when He brought them into my life through the MS Missionary Parent's Fellowship in 1995. The times I spent with them at MMPF and in their home will forever remain part of my precious memories. 'Rene, may God's peace that passeth understanding be given to you and your family, and I do thank my God for every rememberance! Sending love and hugs, Sis

James joins me in thanking GOD for Judge Sugg who always kept loyalty to his LORD JESUS foremost in his heart. He and Rene have encouraged James and me over the years as we served as missionaries in Bangladesh. Love to all you Suggs.

Much love as we celebrate the life of our dear friend and brother, Judge Sugg. Through the years we have been honored to know and serve with him in the International Friend-to-Friend ministry of First Baptist Church, Jackson, a ministry which was greatly enhanced and strengthened by his steady and unswerving loyalty to International students from all over the world who had the occasion to be in the Jackson community.

Continued prayers are lifted for strength to the family in this season of loss.

Until we meet again, dear friend, "PRAISE GOD FROM WHOM ALL BLESSINGS FLOW".
