Susan Weimer Obituary

Susan Joyce Weimer

Brandon

There was a disturbance in the Force early on January 18, 2016 when artist and iconoclast, Susan Joyce Harris Weimer ("Biba") died in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the age of 93.

Born in Bronxville, NY in 1922, Biba was the daughter of George Edgerly Harris and Ruth Colony Harris SoRelle. She served as a US Navy gunnery instructor during WWII.

She was a longtime professor of painting at Edinboro University of PA. Missing the sea, she moved to Ocean Springs in 2001 until Hurricane Katrina, when she moved to Brandon to be near her daughter, Dale (John) Rose and family. In 2013, she moved to Albuquerque, NM to be near granddaughters, Sarah Rose and Tessa Rose. Her work was featured in the 2012 book Unbowed: the Paintings of Susan Joyce Weimer.

She is survived by three children, Dale, now of Corona, NM, Don (Christine Linder) Weimer of Milwaukee, WI, and Christopher (Connie) Weimer of Denver, CO; five grandchildren - Sarah, Tessa, Nicole (Greg Busch) Weimer of Ellicott City, MD; Jonathan Weimer of Milwaukee; and Devon Weimer of Denver; three great-grandchildren; and many beloved friends.

Life with Biba was never dull. Life without her will never be the same.

A celebration of her life is planned for January 24, 2016 at her home. Donations can be made to Karamuhouse.org. Please visit our online guest book for Biba at www.FrenchFunerals.com.

To Dale and family from the Adams family (sisters in Christ). The experience is great and rewarding when you have loved and been loved. Your mom was a breath of fresh air in a very stale room. Her ingenuity and creativity countered all the status quo and made all our lives shine with promise. May your memories sustain you through these difficult times and you seek the holy spirit as your comforter. We will always love you with her spirit forever etched on our hearts. Alean Adams and family.

I am so very sorry about the absence of a grand dame. Unfortunately, I never had the pleasure of knowing her even though I joined Edinboro's faculty in 1988. It appears as though her life was well lived, and for her friends, family, and others who "knew" through her art have experienced a great loss.

Susan has really been a guiding light throughout my career as an artist with Disney. She was the first person I ever met who wasn't someone who worked as an artist for pay- she simply ate and breathed art and "was" an actual painter in all facets of her being. I had the pleasure of attending her classes circa 1977-81, and the larger blessing of being her friend after classes. We spent endless hours at the local Mr. Donut's in Edinboro, and I think I learned more about the creative and intuitive process of art in one evening with Susan, than with all of the rest of the 50+ art faculty at the college. For whatever reason, Susan and I got along swell as fellow artists despite the great gap in our ages, and I feel like I owe her so very much for her generous, sensitive mentoring. It's hard to believe that someone you knew for just a brief space of time could effect a person with their passing to any great degree, But I find myself really grasping at trying to express Susan Weimer's continued influence on my life and art. She was a great lady who rose above the mundane to see the aesthetic richness in everything around her. Rest in Peace, Susan.

I knew Susan since we were both faculty members at EUP. She and I had many stimulating conversations. She was a very interesting lady. Jim LoPresto, Dept. of Physics EUP.

To her grand and great grandchildren. What a wonderful lady to have as a grandmother. Creativity is the core of our human spirit, and no doubt what fed her soul for so many years. That, and of course the love of family and friends. I never knew my grandparents, and have missed that relationship all my life. As you celebrate her amazing life, to be sure, you will be counting your blessings. Her life was so inspiring, I felt compelled to comment. Rest in peace, you wonderful trailblazer!

Dale and Family, I considered Suzie to be one of my life's great influences and I loved spending time with her. She will be missed.

My sympathy to Susan's family whom she loved very much. I remember her fondly as one feisty, highly creative woman who worked hard to establish herself as an artist and contributor to her teaching profession at Edinboro University. Susan has given her family and friends many good special memories in her relationships with them.

Rest in peace, Susan.
