W. Steele Obituary

W. Scott Steele

Madison

W. Scott Steele, 61, of Madison, surrounded by his family, passed away on September 15, 2015 after a long and courageous fight with brain cancer.

Born March 9, 1954 to Bill and Nancy Glisan Steele in Houston, TX. Scott spent his early years in Bartlesville, OK. Scott and his parents moved to Jackson, MS in 1961 where he attended several Jackson public schools. Scott attended Callaway High School and was a key member of their football team. He captained the defense playing linebacker and was named All Big 8 his senior year. Scott attended Ole Miss where he received a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Business Administration. At Ole Miss he played football all four years and lettered his last three as an Outside Linebacker and Defensive End. Scott was also a member of the M Club. He began his professional career as a stockbroker with Merrill Lynch and retired as a Vice President of Investments at Wells Fargo two years ago.

Scott was very well respected amongst his peers as well as his clients. He was a consummate athlete who thrived on competition. What drove him was the will to be great; he was never satisfied with mediocrity. Scott kept a poster in his office that read, PERSERVERENCE: "The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather in a lack of will." Scott truly lived by this code. He was a devoted Christian having served as an Elder and Clerk of the Session at Briarwood Presbyterian Church. Scott had a garden constructed featuring the Rose of Sharon for Briarwood. Scott was an avid animal lover, especially his current cat, Louis.

Scott is survived by his wife of thirty four years, Judy; son, Scott Chandler Austin; parents, Bill and Nancy Steele; sister, Anne Steele Riley (Rusty); nephew, Ryan; sisters-in-law, Joann Gatlin (Charles) and Jan Hampton (Mickey); numerous nieces and nephews and Terry Moore.

Visitation will be held Friday, September 18, 2015, 10:00 am-11:00 am at Briarwood Presbyterian Church with a funeral service at 11:00 am. Burial will follow in Natchez Trace Memorial Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Lundy Gunn, Sonny Aldy, David Evans, Bobby Wallace, David Penton and Jim Woodson. Honorary pallbearers are former Callaway and Ole Miss Football players.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name may be made to Webster Animal Shelter, 525 Post Oak Rd., Madison, MS 39110.

I've only known Scott for 6 years but during that time I was so impressed with his gracious nature, his love of family and his enduring faith in God. His friends and family were lucky to have this kind man a part of our lives.

I am so sorry to learn of this loss. Bill and Nancy Steele and Scott and Anne were so kind to me and my family at Briarwood Presbyterian Church many years ago. Peace to you all.

What sweetheart --and what a smile! I never saw Scott that he didn't have a big smile and a kind word. Judy, you have been an amazing and devoted wife through this long ordeal. Scott is now at peace and whole. You, lovingly, took him to the point in time he could leave us. Take heart that he was well loved on earth by you, Scott, and your many friends and he is beyond loved in heaven. God grant you peace that passes all understanding.
Fondly,

Margaret Hull

I worked with Scott many years ago at A.G. Edwards and will always remember his upbeat personality as well as the Rubik's Cube, that he seemed so eager to master. :) Judy, you were a sweet friend to my mom. I'll be praying for strength and peace for you and your son during the coming days.
