CLINTON — Eva Jane Hatch Smith, born on Jan. 19, 1949, died peacefully in her sleep on June 14, 2021.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Manley O. Hatch and Lois Hawthorne Hatch; her sister, Bettye Lois Hatch; her daughter, Amanda Lee Smith Johnston; and many other loved ones. She is survived by her husband, John Braswell Smith; three daughters Kelly Smith Singer (David), Beth Smith Umar (Danny), and Jackie Smith Wong (Jason); a son-in-law, Thomas Johnston (Emily); two brothers, Bill Hatch (Pao Lin) and Mike Hatch (Merle); a brother-in-law, Danny Whaley (Andra); and many special nieces and nephews. She was so proud of her seven awesome grandchildren: William, Caroline and Charlie Singer; Jackson and Olivia Wong; Nora and Adeline Umar.

She was always there for her four girls … teaching, listening, helping, forgiving, loving, and always paving the way. Mama Jane was an inspiration. She always gave so much and asked for so little in return. Jane was an amazing artist. Drawing, painting, basket weaving, jewelry making, and pottery were just a few of her many talents. She loved to share these talents and her creativity with others.

Thank you to Reverend Ray Bolton and Evangelist Phyllis Bolton for their special prayers. Jane and her family are grateful for the care and support provided by Duke University Medical Center, Clinton Medical Clinic, Dr. Bauman, Dr. Pal, Liberty Hospice, and all of their medical teams.

At Jane's request, no service will be held, and no flowers or food should be sent to the house. She would rather you send food to someone in need, and plant flowers for others to enjoy. She will be cremated, and her ashes scattered at the beach in a private family gathering at a later date.

In her own words … "I was an artist and in the last few years, a basketmaker (but not as good of a basketmaker as my friend, Molly). A special thanks to all my friends. I was so proud to be in the Hawthorne family. To remember me, please take a trip to the beach, grab a chair, bring your favorite drink and watch the waves rolling in and out. I'll be there with you… finally free at the beach."
