Ronald Montgomery Obituary

CLINTON — Dr. Ronald Lynn Montgomery, Sr., age 67 of 30 Scott Place, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2016, at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, Aug. 21, at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 408 College Street, Clinton with Dr. Ray Ammons and Dr. Ron Cava officiating. Interment will follow in Clinton Cemetery.

Born on Sept. 11, 1948, Dr. Montgomery was a native of Guilford County and the son of the late Robert "Bob" Montgomery. Dr. Montgomery graduated from Mt. Olive Jr. College and went on to receive his bachelors degree in education from Campbell University. He then received graduate degrees from Appalachian State University and North Carolina A & T. He completed his post-graduate education in the inaugural graduating class of the doctor of education program at Campbell University. Dr. Montgomery began his career in the Guilford County School system serving as a sixth grade math and science teacher at Gibsonville Public School. He then served as a high school teacher at Eastern Guilford High School. After achieving degrees in administration, he led two schools as a principal, Rena Bullock Elementary and Jamestown Elementary. Continuing his service in education administration, he moved his family to Clinton and served as the Assistant Superintendent for Clinton City Schools. After five years of leadership, he accepted the position of the Superintendent of the Hyde County School System, where he worked for eight years. After retiring from public education, he accepted the position of Headmaster at Harrells Christian Academy where he gave his heart for ten years during which he traveled to Africa as a consulting missionary to a new Christian School.

Dr. Montgomery ended nearly five decades of service by leading a group of believers as the founding headmaster at Elizabethtown Christian Academy where in three short years he grew the school from an idea to an educational ministry serving almost 100 students. He retired June 30, 2016.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Clinton where he served as a Sunday School Teacher, Trustee, Deacon, Minister of Music, Moderator (14 yrs.), Song Leader, Choir Director and a member of the Administrative Committee, as well as the Next Steps Task Force.

Dr. Montgomery was married to Bennie Peace Montgomery for 44 years. In addition to his wife, survivors include four children: Ronald "Lynnie" Montgomery Jr. (Rebecca), Margo Jean Montgomery Bowker (Ellery), Ruth Ann Montgomery Parker (Michael) and Robert "Robbie" Montgomery (Ashley), all of Clinton; 13 grandchildren: Victoria Paige Montgomery, Brittany Alexis Montgomery, Cassidy Lynn Montgomery, Caroline Rebecca Montgomery, Adam Lynn Bowker, Jeana Grace Love Bowker, Jack David Bowker, Gabriel Montgomery Bowker, Mabel Rose Parker, Magdalene Ruth Parker, Matilda Rayne Parker, Laken Wood Montgomery and Drew Major Montgomery; mother, Gladys "Sue" Montgomery of Burlington and brothers, Steve Montgomery of Charlotte and Mark Montgomery of Burlington.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Aug. 20, from 2-5 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Clinton, and other times at the Montgomery home.

Ronnie's Mom, Sue Montgomery of Burlington, was raised by my Uncle "Butch" and his wife Mae (Sue's sister). Ronnie and his brothers were and will always be my cousins in life and love. My prayers are with his Mother and family.
