Vena Mae Stanley Jones, 87, of Newton Grove died peacefully early Saturday morning , June 15, 2024 at SECU Hospice House in Smithfield.
A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, June 18, at 11 a.m. at Mt Elam Baptist Church, Roseboro, with burial following in the church cemetery. Rev Brandon Glunt and Rev. Keith Smith will officiate.
Vena was born and raised in Johnston County in the Meadow Community to the late Kelly and RoVelma McLamb Stanley. A 1955 graduate of Meadow School, she continued her education at Rex School of Nursing graduating in 1958 as a Registered Nurse.
She began her nursing career at Rex Hospital and also worked at Campbell College Infirmary, Johnston Memorial Hospital and retired from nursing after 44 years from Sampson Memorial Hospital, Clinton, as nurse manager of Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). She was also instrumental in the design and creation of the PACU unit at Sampson Regional. She was active in helping to organize in 1983, the North Carolina Association of Post Anesthesia Nursing (NCAPAN) and served as the Governmental Affairs Director in 1997-98.
Vena was a faithful member of Mt Elam Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher, GA leader, and WMU director. She also supported the Missions program throughout her church and community including the Spanish Mission. She was a very devoted Christian who was involved in every facet of her church.
A charter member of Mingo Order of the Eastern Star, she is a current member of Newton Grove Eastern Star. She also served in 1975-76 as Grand Ruth, a state officer in The Eastern Star.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Robert Jackson Jones; a son, James Robert Jones of Newton Grove; and a daughter, Cora Maude Jones Godwin (James) of Benson. She adored her six grandchildren, Joshua Ethan Godwin (Brooke)of Benson; Jordan Ezra Godwin (Lauren), of Wilmington; Justin Robert Jones of Newton Grove; Jackson Eldridge Godwin (Hailey) of Princeton; Jorjanna Godwin Wrench (Justin) and Jonathan Emerson Godwin of Benson along with her 9 great-grandchildren. Vena is survived by her brother, Johnny Mac Stanley of Benson and in-laws, Kenneth Jones (Joan) of Newton Grove and James Wendell (Duke) Jones of Raleigh.
The family will receive friends Monday, June 17, at Crumpler-Honeycutt Funeral Home, Clinton from 6-8 p.m.
