Ruth Daniels Obituary

Ruth Iola Weldon Daniels was born on November 21, 1930 in Fairfield County, South Carolina. She passed away on Thursday, August 14, 2025 at the Opus Post-Acute Rehabilitation Center in West Columbia, South Carolina at the age of 94. The seventh child of thirteen born to the late Willie Weldon and Bertha Rabb Weldon, Ruth was educated in the Fairfield County public schools and was trained as a licensed practical nurse (LPN) at the Good Samaritan-Waverly Hospital, a historic hospital for African American patients located in Columbia, SC. Ruth spent her entire career as a nurse, first at the Waverly Hospital where she received her training, then at the Crafts-Farrow State Hospital, and finally at the VA Hospital from which she ultimately retired. She treated her patients and their families with care, compassion, and an unwavering work ethicthat spanned the course of her decades-long career. Ruth was married to the late James Daniels. And to that union was born one child, the late Gwendolyn Janette Daniels, who was the true apple of Ruth's eye. Affectionally known by her siblings as "Mojo," Ruth was the heart and soul of her family, with her vibrant spirit, humor, and enthusiasm. Ruth loved sewing, fishing at her family pond, and working in her garden, where her green thumb nurtured the most beautiful plants, flowers, and vegetables. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, where she remained active until her health declined. And even in her weakening health, she found joy and solace in spirituals and other songs. In addition to her mother, father, husband, and daughter, Ruth was predeceased by her eight sisters – Marjorie Owens, Annie Lee (Herman) Sancho, Mattie (Jimmy) Owens, Oreather(Simpson) Brown, Bertha Jane Weldon, Betty Jane Weldon, Odaris Weldon, and Mary Ellen (Clarence) Lewis – and four brothers – Willie Thomas Weldon, Charles (Estelle) Weldon, Paul (Frances) Weldon, and John Henry Weldon. She leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and loved ones, who will hold her memory close and keep her legacy alive.
