William Marshall Obituary

WILLIAM “BILL” SARGENT MARSHALL
July 22, 1921 ˜ April 12, 2023

Bill Marshall peacefully entered his heavenly home on April 12, 2023 at 101+ years “young.” He died as he lived: with loved ones nearby, with gratitude for his life and friendships, and with readiness and resolution. His sharp mind and joyful spirit remained intact during his final days at his son’s home in Salem, OR, where he had resided for the past three years.
William Sargent Marshall was born in Seattle to William Matthew and Cora Nell Marshall, and was the youngest of four children. He was always energetic and hardworking. As a youth, he held several jobs to help his family through the Depression. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1938 and was the class secretary for the alumni newsletter until a few months ago. Bill entered Wilson’s Business College, and paid his tuition by working on the janitor force. In a year, he was made a full-time instructor. He was then hired by the Ford Motor Company, beginning his lifetime career in the automobile business.
World War II interrupted his work life. He was an Army Air Corp Fighter Pilot, logging 97 missions in P-47 Thunderbolts, flying out of Pisa, Italy. He became a Captain, received 5 Air Medals, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Purple Heart. Bill was instrumental in organizing reunions for his squadron for 17 years and stayed in touch with the men and their widows.
After the war, Bill returned to the Ford Motor Company as a Field Manager. His strong work ethic and winsome personality attracted the attention of George Grandy, the Ford franchise owner in Vancouver, and was invited to join their team. Fifteen years later, Bill became the sole owner, renaming the dealership Bill Marshall Ford. He valued his many loyal employees, treating them well and creating an environment of respect and care for them and their customers. He told his work force, “Don’t let the sun set on a complaint.” The dealership earned a reputation for honesty and outstanding customer service, as well as many civic contributions. Bill was named the state Dealer of the Year and was recognized by Time Magazine as one of the top new car dealers in the country. He served as President of the local car dealer’s organization and as President of the Washington State Auto Dealers Association. Bill sold the dealership in 1978 and maintained his automobile interests by leasing and selling used cars, eventually retiring in 2005.
Bill met Barbara Ewing on a blind date in May of 1948. They married four months later and moved to Vancouver. Their union lasted 48 years until the family lost Barbara in 1996 to pulmonary fibrosis. Their children, Gregory, Marilyn, and Charles, were the main focus of their lives and and they supported them whole-heartedly in all of their endeavors.
In 1998, Bill married Dolores (Dee) Hill, a friend from his high school days. They enjoyed 22 years together. Dee passed away in April 2020. This second marriage brought Dee’s daughter Connie (Bill) Hill Swartz into his life, and they shared a special relationship which continued until his passing.
Bill deeply grieved the loss his son Greg in October 2020 to a debilitating brain disease. Bill’s legacy will continue to live on through his daughter Marilyn (Jeff) Vancil, his son Charlie (Nancy) Marshall, his daughter-in-law Nancy (Greg) Marshall, their families, and his extended family. He adored and was adored by his beloved grandchildren: Aaron, Brooke, Kristen, Emily, Jonathan, Kurtis, Ryan, Caitlin, John, and Scott, and his 19 precious great-grandchildren.
Bill delighted in children and couldn’t pass up a chance to chit chat with them or perform his famous handshake when he would jump up and down, tell the kids not to shake so hard, only to be asked to “do it again.” He entertained the young ones by having great fun in all kinds of ways. Bill’s love for children led him to be a classroom volunteer at Hough Elementary School where he was known as “Grandpa Bill.”
Bill, along with his wife Barbara, were pillars of good will and volunteer service in the Vancouver area. They were both honored, at separate times, as the “First Citizen of Clark County.” Bill gave leadership to many fundraising efforts and sponsored many youth activities. Bill also participated on many organizational Boards and served in numerous volunteer roles at the First Presbyterian Church where he was a member for over 70 years. One of his most satisfying accomplishments was heading up “Operation Quagmire,” a community-wide effort to re-sod Kiggins Bowl (then a mud flat) and to place lights on the baseball field.
The hallmark of Bill’s life was PEOPLE! His family was at the top of his list and he cared for each one of them personally. As the kids matured, he was a source of wisdom, support, and inspiration, and he marveled at who they had become.
Bill treasured countless friendships throughout his life and was masterful at staying in touch. He loved people with his kindness, generosity, humor, wisdom, and thoughtful service. He was not impressed with status and made friends with whomever crossed his path. Many people have told the family, “He was just a wonderful and remarkable man!”
Bill’s life will be celebrated on Saturday, April 29th, at 10:00 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church, 4300 Main St in Vancouver, and will be available on the church’s YouTube channel. To honor Bill’s love of children (and in lieu of flowers), please send contributions to the Hough Foundation, 205 E. 11th Street, Suite 200, Vancouver, WA 98660, or donate online. The family intends to purchase a lasting tribute which is yet to be determined.

Bill was a friend of my Father, and we always bought our cars from his dealership. As an adult we bought cars also from Bill.
After he sold his business and opened his office downtown, I stopped by to visit a few times and I really enjoyed our conversations. On one occasion I told him I was also flying and preparing to get a license. He told me that once he flew a small plane and vowed never to again as he felt they were unsafe as opposed to the P-51 Mustangs he flew on missions over Germany. I thought he was giving me advice so I took it. What a great person

Marilyn, Charlie & family. I was not able to attend the memorial service but was able to watch it on YouTube. It was a wonderful tribute and eulogy to a wonderful person and to see children, grandchildren, in-laws, et al involved in the service. I especially enjoyed the short video of Mr. Marshall 'dancing' around with his cane, with Charlie and his grandchildren with the energy of a young man. I know you were all very proud of him and his legacy.
Peace

As I read the other comments shared about Bill, they echo what immediately came to my mind. Bill was a true gentleman - gentle, considerate, welcoming, genuinely interested in others. He was a friend of my grandfather George Propstra and, as I recall, we leased office space to him after he "retired", right next to The Holland Restaurant, where he was a frequent and familiar face to be seen. The world was a better place for people like him. Thank you, Bill, and God bless!

I send sympathy and condolences to Marilyn, Charlie, et al on behalf of the entire Munson family of Vancouver. Vancouver has lost a pillar of the community and a real gentleman.
In the mid-70's my wife & I and all her family met at The Holland Restaurant for lunch. We all walked in waiting to be seated. I noticed Mr. Marshall sitting in a booth on the window side of the restaurant along McLoughlin Blvd. with another man. I didn't think he saw me and our group was soon seated around the corner on the Main St. side of the restaurant. About five minutes later Mr. Marshall walked over to our table, smiled, put his hand on my shoulder and shook my hand and said, "Mr. Munson, I saw you walk in and I thought I'd come over and say 'hi' and see how you're doing".
He introduced himself to everyone at the table, exchanged pleasantries with all of us, put his hand on my shoulder again, shook my hand again and said, "it was nice meeting all of you and it was nice talking to you Mr. Munson. Take care". Wow! Now that was a class act from a very classy person. I have no doubt he did that with civic leaders and other business people over the years and why he was so well regarded.
His support and sponsorship of Columbia Little League & Heights Babe Ruth teams and The Aquila (Hudson's Bay's school paper) was just a few of his many generous gifts and they were priceless.
A side note: my dad, Jay, was a mechanic many, MANY years ago at Grandy Ford before he got into construction. He always owned a Ford or Mercury during his lifetime.
May peace be with you all.

Bill Marshall was such an amazing man, and I was very fortunate to call him a dear friend. He helped me purchase my daughter's first car, and would check-in with her through the years to make sure it was running well. He was so intelligent, fun, a natty dresser, and always had a kind word to say about everybody. I am so sad that I will be out-of-state on the day of his celebration. My deepest condolences to his family... He was a lovely man and will be terribly missed.

Hi. My name is Terry King HB class of 1964. My sister Becky graduated with Marilyn. She went to the 50th class reunion and told me that Mr. Marshall was in attendance. I bought a 1966 Fairlane GTA from Marshall Ford in the summer of 1966. A beautiful car. I worked with one of Bill Marshall's salesmen named Bob Synoground. I have been in touch with Bob recently. Marshall Ford treated me fairly and respectably that summer long ago as I was still just 19 years of age. Fond memories of Bill Marshall Ford. God bless his family. Terry King

We did not know Bill but, have known Marilyn and Jeff for many years. Marilyn loved her Dad and he loved her. They had a special relationship. If Marilyn is a reflection of Bill, and I know she is, then he was a terrific person.

I didn't know Bill directly, but through his daughter Marilyn, my Dad and Uncle and the community that surrounded him and he them.

Dad (Chuck Holman, a WWII Navy pilot) sold Fords, Lincolns and Mercurys in the 50's. Uncle Orville "Barney" Barnard sold Fords for Bill for many years and Marilyn was in my class at Hudson Bay. She was a wonderful example of Bill's kind, positive & supportive presence. She brought Bill to our 50th H.S. reunion (Camas Meadows G.C.). It was great to see both of them!
I was involved in other Presbyterian churches in the State, for over 40 years, but arrived at VFPC in the last 3 years, to realize Bill had been a member there, for about 70 years of his life. He added much to the community and the people I grew up with and sets a great example of a positive Christian influence to be emulated! God bless you and yours, Bill.

So sorry to hear of your fathers passing. I have known Bill ever since I was in high school which goes back to 1965. I worked at the Ford garage after school. It was my first job when I was sixteen years old. I washed cars and cleaned up the shop after the mechanics left work for the day. I was fortunate that my father Bud Cooke worked there as the service manager for the dealership. I enjoyed working there during my high school years. I have fond memories of all the employees there and especially of Bill Marshall. He was a people person and was always interested in those who worked at the dealership. I remember the time when his salesman Diz Andruss offered me his brand-new dealer car a 1967 ford LTD for graduation night. After the dance my date and I got into a small car accident which was my fault. I felt so bad and ashamed. I didn't go home that night but waited at the Ford shop outside until my dad got to work. He was the first one to arrive at the dealership as he opened up the shop in the early morning. When he got there, he told me to wait for Mr. Marshall and explain to him what happened and said you are responsible for the vehicle and will have to pay to have it fixed. I will never forget how Mr. Marshall treated me. He was kind and said I am sorry it happened, but I think our company insurance will pay for it. I will never forget your father's kindness, generosity and example. As time went on, I purchased two new cars from the Bill Marshall Ford Dealership. I am so sorry for your loss. I will always remember your father. Your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

With Love and Sincerity,
Jeffrey Cooke

I so enjoyed my dental visits with Mr Marshall. He was a kind, smart and insightful man. He lived his family and community. He had this funny little bridge that Dr Lieser put in years ago. I struggled to floss it. He said, "Let me do it" so every time after I flossed his others I gave him the floss to do it himself . Find memories of a wonderful man.
