Charles M. Athey

Charles Athey, age 96, passed away Friday, November 7, 2025, at Deerfield Retirement Village in Urbandale Iowa.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at the First United Methodist Church. Visitation was Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m., at First United Methodist. Burial will be held 2 pm, Wednesday in Wyuka Cemetery Lincoln, Nebraska.
In lieu of plants and flowers, memorials are suggested to the family for future designation.
Charles M. Athey was born April 22, 1929, in North Loup, Nebraska, to Reuben and Merna (Johnson) Athey. He graduated from Tekamah high school in 1946. He furthered his education at the University Nebraska Lincoln. He was married to Lois Snow on October 18, 1950, in Tekamah, Neb. He taught vocational agriculture for one year in Fairbury, Neb., before being drafted into the Army. He served for 2 years. Upon discharge, he moved to Pierce, Neb., where he taught for five years. In 1958, he moved to Columbus and joined the First National Bank as agricultural representative. He retired as Senior Vice-President after serving for over 30 years.
In retirement, he enjoyed traveling, playing golf, and cheering on the Huskers. Over the years, he served the community in numerous ways. He was elected to Columbus School Board for 2 terms. He was on the Platte County Agriculture Society board for many years. Along with working with various local charitable organizations. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.
He is survived by wife, Lois of 75 years; son, David and Bonnie Athey of Laramie, Wyo.; son, Dean and Carolyn Athey of Grimes, Iowa; son, Paul and Susan Athey of Colorado Spring, Colo.; sister, Mildred Peterson; sister, Ardis Huston; sister, Janis Neurnberger; sister, Cozette Legino; along with 7 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Denise.
