COLUMBUS -- Charles Gans, 79, of rural Columbus, died Sunday, March 31, 2013, at his home.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 20, 11:00 a.m. at the Gass Haney Funeral Home with Pastor Dusty Sprague officiating. Interment will be in the Columbus Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Hartman Post 84 Honor Guard.
Charles Gans was born May 18, 1933, in Columbus, to Michael and Sophie (Klaus) Gans. He attended school in Polk County and graduated from Columbus High School in 1951. On June 4, 1953, Charlie entered the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged on May 2, 1955.
He returned to Columbus and raised cattle on his land around Gans Lake. He loved animals and enjoyed taking care of livestock. You could always count on Charlie to lend a hand, and there were always plenty of laughs to go with it. Charlie hauled cattle with his neighbors to Union Stockyards (Omaha Stockyards). Charlie's thoughts were if you working you might as well have a good time so he always kept the jokes coming.
He lived a simple life by the lake and loved to fish. He always welcomed visitors to stop by and see him anytime. For all those who knew Charlie, they would say that he had a gentle, genuine soul. He will be missed by many.
Charlie is survived by many cousins and friends from the Columbus and surrounding communities.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Sophie Gans.
