Janice "Jan" Doné

September 21, 1950 - February 20, 2025

Janice "Jan" Doné, of Lincoln, NE passed away on February 20, 2025, at age 74.

Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, February 24th at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus, NE. Visitation is on Sunday, February 23rd from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., and will continue Monday morning from 9:30 a.m., until service time. Services will be immediately followed by a luncheon at Friedhof Building, in Columbus. Interment is at Erychleb Cemetery in Stanton, NE where a graveside service will take place following the luncheon on Monday at 2:00 p.m.

Janice Ann McKee was born in Columbus, NE on September 21, 1950, to James and Lola (Hewitt) McKee. She joined two brothers, Jim and Jack, and was followed by her two sisters, Joyce and Judy. Jan spent her childhood in Columbus and following her graduation from Columbus High she moved to Lincoln, NE to continue her education at the Lincoln School of Commerce.

Jan married Ken Doné of Stanton, NE during a blizzard on March 20, 1971. They subsequently lived in Lincoln, NE, Columbus, NE, Rochester, NY and Cedar Rapids, IA before returning to Columbus in 1977. There they raised their two children, Jenny and Brad, and were members of St. Anthony's Church. Jan was a homemaker for many years but as her children grew, she kept busy working at The Pawnee Scout followed by the Columbus Telegram.

As empty-nesters, Jan and Ken relocated to Nebraska City, NE in 1995 and stayed for several years. While in Nebraska City, Jan greatly enjoyed working for a local florist and the Chamber of Commerce. In 2015, Jan and Ken returned to Lincoln to enjoy their retirement years.

Jan enjoyed crafts of all kinds, from ceramics and macrame many years ago to more recently creating beautiful scrapbooks that her family will cherish forever. She loved flowers and had an enviable collection of houseplants. Jan found any excuse to go shopping. Her favorite time of the year was Christmas, when she put her shopping talents to good use spoiling her grandkids and watching (on repeat) every Hallmark movie.

Jan was preceded in death by her parents; her parents-in-law, Joe and Helen Doné; her siblings; and her nephew, Jason McKee. Jan is survived by her husband, Ken; daughter, Jenny and her husband, Fredrik Esping of Broomfield, CO; son, Brad and his wife, Jen (Stairs) of Kearney, NE; and her grandchildren, Lars Esping and Addison Esping; as well as her many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.
