Karen Sue Maurstad, 72, of Ashburn, Va., went to heaven on January 30th, 2026, after a life marked by deep faith, steady kindness, and a remarkable gift for making others feel seen and cared for. Karen was born on July 14, 1953, to Frances and Honorita Micek. She attended Scotus Central Catholic High School and Platte Community College where she met the love of her life, David.
Karen is survived by her husband of 52 years, David I. Maurstad of Ashburn, Va.; by her children, Ingolf (Laura) Maurstad of Beatrice, Neb., Derek (Angela) Maurstad of Omaha, Neb., and Laura Maurstad Ridenour of Ashburn, Va.; her nine grandchildren, Addison, David, Bergen, Eloise, Ellory, Ainsley, Byron, Oliver and Ingrid; sister, Charlotte (Paul) Beran of Columbus, Neb.; sister, Anita (Russ) Aguilar of Monument, Colo.; brother, Kurt (Chrissy) Micek of Sandy, Utah; brother, Gary (Kaye) Micek of Irvine, Calif.; brother, Jon (Naomi) Micek of Columbus, Neb.; and brother, Brian (Jeanne) Micek of Coumbus, Neb.; brother-in-law, Brian Kleveland; and many nieces, nephews, and friends who were blessed by her kindness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frances and Honorita Micek and sister, Janet Kleveland.
A service celebrating Karen's life will be held Friday, February 13, 2026, at 3 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, 701 N. 6th Street, Beatrice, NE with Pastor Nathan Metzger and Seminarian Heidi Price officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday, February 12, 2026, from noon until 8 p.m. with the family greeting relatives and friends from 5:30 until 7 p.m. at Fox Funeral Home, 1116 N. 19th Street, Beatrice, NE. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church located at 562 17th Avenue, Columbus, NE with Father Patrick Harrison, Celebrant.
The family prefers memorials in lieu of flowers and may be directed at Beatrice Community Players, 412 Ella Street, Beatrice, NE 68310, or The Nebraska P.E.O, 413 N. 5th Street, Beatrice, NE 68310.
