COLUMBUS - A funeral service for Vernon Long, 92, will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 17, at First United Methodist Church in Columbus.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Norfolk with military honors.
Vernon R. Long was born March 10, 1925, in Norfolk to Robert and Frieda (Miller) Long. One day after graduating from Norfolk High School, Vern entered the U.S. Army Air Corps where he served from 1943 until completing his tour of duty as a staff sergeant in 1945. He flew in the 8th Army Air Corps over occupied Europe and received the Distinguished Flying Cross. On June 1, 1945, he was united in marriage to Ruth Young at the United Methodist Church in Norfolk. They moved to Columbus in 1948. Vern worked at Sears for many years until retiring in 1987. Vern was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he was president of Keystone for many years. He was also a member of the American Legion and VFW, and was a Boy Scout leader and master gardener.
He is survived by his sons, Dan Long of Saunderstown, Rhode Island, Robert Long of Columbus, Bruce (Barb) Long of Columbus and Steven (Karen) Long of Columbus; daughter, Marsha (Ardell) Kyncl of Newman Grove; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Long in 2009; parents, Robert and Frieda Long; son, Jeffrey Long; granddaughter, Elizabeth Kyncl; and sister, Vivian Anderson.
