COLUMBUS - Virgil Spitz, 81, of Columbus, died Thursday, March 23, 2017, at Bryan LGH West in Lincoln.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Sunday, March 26, and continue 9:30-10:30 a.m. Monday, all at St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Columbus. The funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Luke's United Church of Christ with Pastor Adam Lassen officiating. Interment will be in Gruetli Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. Monday at the church. Memorials may be directed to those of the family's or donor's choice.
Virgil L. Spitz was born July 5, 1935, in Columbus to George and Inez (Person) Spitz. He attended District 16 Rural Platte County Grade School and graduated from Kramer High School in 1951. As a youth, Virgil worked for the Dr. Pepper Company and enjoyed playing baseball. He worked with his father on the family farm prior to his marriage to Darlyn Friess on July 20, 1957, at St. Luke's United Church of Christ.
Virgil loved the farm, raising cattle, riding horses and visiting with anyone who would take the time. He enjoyed playing softball, watching Husker sports, riding his snowmobile and three-wheeler, and going hunting and fishing. He was on the board of the Nebraska Cattlemen Association, and was active in team pinning. Virgil was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ where he was a member of the Diaconate Board and a mentor for the confirmation students.
Virgil is survived by his wife Darlyn Spitz of Columbus; son Kurt (Laura) Spitz of Columbus; daughter Kelly (Alan) Beiermann of Columbus; son Robert Spitz of Columbus; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers Orville (Phyllis) Spitz, Delmar "Smokie" (Marlene A.) Spitz and Duane "Mick" (Marlene K.) Spitz, all of Columbus; and sister-in-law Evelyn Spitz of Houston, Texas.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents George and Inez Spitz; son Michael John Spitz; granddaughter Samantha Spitz; sister Malva Gewecke; and brother Gerald Spitz.
