Chew Shannon Obituary

Chew Sawyer Shannon

Memphis, TN

Chew Sawyer Shannon, 67, peacefully slept away to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, February 26, 2019. He passed away at home lying beside his wife, Carolyn Jessemy Shannon. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee on August 31, 1951 to Joseph Perry Shannon, Sr., and Othella Sawyer Shannon. Mr. Shannon accepted Christ at a young age at Mt. Olive AME Church. He graduated from Hamilton High School in Memphis and continued his education at Brown University in Rhode Island, where he received an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering. He married the love of his life, Carolyn, on March 4, 1978. They remained married for 41 years and to this union four children were born. His love for engineering propelled him to devote 40 years of his life to the profession: seven years as a telephone engineer at South Central Bell (AT&T) and 33 years as a Streetlighting Engineer at Memphis, Light, Gas & Water Division (MLGW). His life's philosophy was: "Do all to the best of your ability and always help others."

His proudest moments in life were attending his children's graduations from top universities. Three children graduated from Harvard University and one graduated from Howard University. He also enjoyed being a member of Brown Missionary Baptist Church in Southaven, Mississippi.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; daughter, Victoria (Rohan); three sons, Chew II (Ciera), Charles (Faith), and Christopher (Cara); his brother, Joseph Shannon, Jr.; his niece, Marshelle Harper; seven grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.

There will be two visitations held. A first visitation will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2019 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at N.J. Ford & Sons Funeral Home at 12 S. Parkway W., Memphis, Tennessee 38109. A second visitation will be held on Sunday, March 3, 2019 from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. at Brown Missionary Baptist Church, 980 Stateline Road E, Southaven, Mississippi 38671.

Funeral services will take place on Sunday, March 3, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Brown Missionary Baptist Church, 980 Stateline Road E, Southaven, Mississippi 38671, with Pastor Bartholomew Orr, officiating and the repast immediately following.

The burial will take place on Monday, March 4, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery, 824 S. Dudley Street, Memphis, Tennessee 38104.

Happy " Separation Day" Chew ! I Love you and still miss you. Thank you God for allowing Chew I to be with us 67 1/2 yrs. I have a lot of good memories of the life we shared together. I am sure you see how you children are doing. I am so happy that your spirit and soul have been set free from a decaying body. I can only imagine how eternal life feels. I look forward to seeing you when my work is done here and God calls me home. Until we meet again,
Remember, You are loved and missed.

Chew Is So Well Remembered Until This Very Day...

Often times The Electric Engineering Department at MLGW was activated during Power Restoration Efforts, here in Memphis, and the Other Municipalities in Shelby County, including the UnIncorporated Areas, as well...

During several of these most challenging times, Chee & I were Team Restoration Partners, as we went out in two´s, obviously for Safety Reasons!

We helped get a lot of Lights Back On, Sooner, because of Our Shared Positive Work Ethic and that of knowing the Neighborhood Configurations Sooooooo Well!

Chew & I did some Good Work, Shared Some Good Food, and even had A Little Fun, along The Way...

Do Miss Chew, Too!!!

Thanks for the opportunity to Share!

I joke with him about laughing like you now and how he's a walking computer just like you lol. We talk about you to your grandbabies often. We're all sending you the biggest hug in heaven. We love and miss you very much.

I miss you Uncle Chew!!! We shared one of the coolest and awsome day ever, our Birthday.!! We were birthday buddies and that made me feel special just to be able to share that day. We would call each other every year and remind the other that we shared the same birthday. A fun daddy, from what I saw as a little girl. The kids are blessed to carry your name and the legacy. your wife (Auntie K), your other half carries your love and shares with others... I think I remember Lil Chew rubbing your head one day and saying "your such a fun daddy" Lol and you just laughed.... Thank you for being in our lives. Since I can't submit non original poems, I'll leave the name for others to read.

Our sincere and heartfelt condolences to Chew's family, friends and especially those of his MLGW family. My husband and I knew Chew from working there, previously. We had several conversations with Chew about his beloved family and his being so proud of their children's academic achievements. Every morning in the parking garage he would share his warm smile and pleasant demeanor with the wave of his hand and a lovely, "Good Morning!" Chew will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Caroline, I first met Chew in the fifth grade. We graduated from Hamilton High School where Chew was a quiet, studious student, easy to talk with and had a great sense of humor. He will truly be missed. I pray that God's unfailing grace will soften the hurt you are feeling and bring your heart the peace, comfort and hope that it needs to heal.
