So sorry to hear of your mother's passing. She painted a beautiful small still life for me many years ago, which we treasure.

We were fortunate to have been Martha's neighbors "across the street" in the 1960's! She was a wonderful, generous, caring neighbor who never failed to show up when I needed her most. My family and I enjoyed visits from her and her family in our home in North Carolina; and we've kept in touch till the very end. Some of my most prized possessions are her handiwork. She was the best and I'll miss her.

My thoughts and prayers are with Martha's family and friends. I will never forget what an honor it was to hear in an email from her how deeply she appreciated my essay on her husband; at the time, I was an assistant professor at UC Davis, and had just published my very first academic essay, which appeared in the MQ. We kept in touch from that point on. I have appreciated her friendship and support over the years. She was a remarkable woman.

Martha was a devoted reader and a supportive fan, always complimenting me on my blogs and columns, and forever encouraging me to keep on keeping on. I miss her already.
