Not sure what to say?

This is cousin J. Oliver Smith Jr.
Virgil and I were born the same year. A couple of times Virgil talked me in to leaving the farm in Tipton County in the summer for a Saturday job of pushing the ice cream cart. Then in the late fall we went door to door selling doughnuts. Boy, Did we ever make some spending money. Then Virgil went to the Marines as I went to the Army. I'm not sure which one of us talked each of ourselves into getting into something sometimes good?
You can see that we all have good memories. Now I will say, I think Mary was Virgil's special strength, and may our good Lord be very special to you and all the family!

It doesn't seem possible that Virgil is no longer walking upon this earth. He was one of those people who you always enjoyed being around. Always fun and funny and engaging. My young life revolved around 1st Pres Memphis, and Virgil was such an important part of that life. I started babysitting for Mary and Virgil when Sonny was a baby and I was a very young teenager, and my last babysitting job with the Griffiths was when I was 18 and about to go to college and had all FOUR of the boys at once. I felt like a part of your family. I've been thinking about you, Mary, and all of you boys, a lot this week. It's such a sad thing to realize that he won't be there anymore. But his memory will live on because he added so much life to life that it can never run out. Much love and prayers to you all.

Virgil was faithful, kind, encouraging, wise, light-hearted, taking everyone but himself seriously. He loved to find the humour in life. Salt of the earth. Mary, Sonny, Brian, Joel, and Shannon, we are so sorry for your, and our, loss.

Virgil's personality had the same effect as a porch light on a moth. You were drawn to him. I never saw him by himself in a crowded room. His attention and affection were always sincere. I have so many happy memories of Virgil and I will never forget his laugh. Mary, you are in my prayers.

Virgil was a positive force of nature who always met things head-on, energetic and smiling. I'm a better person for having known him and spent time with him - and I'm sure hundreds of others feel the same way. I can only hope to have as rich a legacy. Much love to Mary and all who loved him!

Mr. Virgil was one of the most kind people I had ever met. It was a joy getting to know him for the 3 short years we spent together in the band. I am honored to have called him a friend. My family will miss him greatly.

Virgil was one of my all time favorite people. He coached our First Pres basketball team back in the early 60's and had a very strong and positive influence on me. My prayers are with the entire family. He was a good man.

Virgil just can't be gone! What a life source! Sweet, generous, funny man of honor. My birthday buddy. An institution at First Presbyterian on par with my grandmother, Virginia Withers (Mamaw). Quite a legacy who will be missed by many. <3
